The history of gun swivels can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time, pistols were typically equipped with traditional cocking mechanisms that had to be held in hand in order to rotate the barrels around their axis. This required significant muscle and arm strength and was often difficult to do while wearing gloves. To solve this problem, a number of inventors came up with ideas for new ways to cock pistols. One such inventor was George Stephenson, who developed a type of pistol known as the Stephenson Gun which featured an all-metal breechblock that could be rotated around itsaxis without having to hold onto any material. The Stephenson Gun became popular and several other designers followed suit, resulting in a variety of pistols featuring different types of swivels. One of the earliest examples of a gun that featured a swivel mechanism was created by Samuel Colt. Colt’s Patent No. 718 controversy involved a revolver called the “Peacemaker” which featured an unconventional design for its time. The Peacemaker features two barrels connected by a hinge device known as the “ Hammerlock Swivel”. The hammers on each barrel are connected by a pivot joint located near the muzzle; when pulled towards or away fromthe muzzle, these joints allow the barrels to rotate independently about their axes (i.e., they can swivel). It should also be noted that this type of gun was not actually issued into service until 1859! In contrast, prior to this date Dirk Hamann had developed an earlier version of what is now known as the revolvers chambered in .32 ACP which featured similar hammerlocking arrangements but used standard pistolsights and triggers instead of hammers and pivots

Platteville is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Milton–Waukesha metropolitan area. Platteville was platted in 1854 by John and Lura platters. The name derived from early French for "plain of the Platte." The first settler in Platteville was Isaac Wells. He built a log cabin on the east side of the Platte River in 1855. Other early settlers were James and Nancy Hingle, who arrived around 1857. The first store in Platteville was opened by George Willschaefer in 1860. In 1862, Jens Jensen bought land at the mouth of White Creek and began to build a house there. By 1865, there were six stores and two churches in Platteville with a population of 215 people. In 1870, two brothers named Fenton bought land along White Creek and started to build a farm called Belle Isle that became an important center for dairy farming around this time. By 1876, there were thirteen farms with over 4500 head of cows and 3000 pigs operating in what is now Douglas County. A year later, platting new towns began appearing all across western Wisconsin due to railroad construction; one such town was Platteland (later renamed Green Bay), which would eventually be known as Platteville after its founder John Pappas
The first settler in Platteville was Levi Coffin, who arrived in 1820. The town was named for Major David platte, an officer of the United States military during the Mexican-American War. For a time, Platteville functioned as a post office. In 1847, the town became a village when it had a population of fifty residents. By 1861, the population had grown to one hundred and fifty-six people. In 1863, Platteville became a city and remained so until 1957.
