Platteville is a small town in the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The plat for Platteville was filed in 1847 and surveyed in 1851. The town was named after General James K. Polk who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in Platteville on October 16, 1854, under the name of Prairie du Chien. A new post office was built on May 10, 1865, by order of President Abraham Lincoln as part of his Executive Order No. 527 which called for towns to be named after officers or men who had participated in American victories abroad or had made significant contributions to their community or country during peacetime. After Lincoln's death, postmasters continued to be appointed by local officials and were not subject to presidential executive orders or presidential nominations; this practice continued until March 15, 1907 when Postmaster General John Wickersham nominated Jens Moller for appointment as Platteville's first postmaster because he "occupied an important position" within the Milwaukee postal service). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land.
