The first settlers to Platteville were farmers who arrived in 1836. They built a cabin on the banks of the river and started farming. By 1840, they had erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The original plat for Platteville was filed with the state in 1846 and it described an area that included present-day Elmwood Park, portions of Platttown east of I-94 (now known as South Side), and part of today's north side of La Crosse County. In 1850, when Platteville became a village, it had 981 residents living in 104 buildings including 2 churches and 11 schools totaling 20 classrooms and 3 stores. By 1860, when it again became a town, there were 2 churches and 6 schools with a total enrollment of 1062 residents living in 248 buildings including 5 hospitals/laboratories The growth of railroad transportation led to an increase in business activity around la Crosse during this time period; however, many businesses closed due to competition from larger cities such as Milwaukee or Chicago. This caused some hardship for local farmers who could not compete with larger companies but also created opportunities for young men and women who wanted to start their own businesses after watching their parents do so. However, these new opportunities did not last long because railroad transportation declined during the late 19th century while other types of industry boomed." In 1911 there were only 4 businesses left operating in town hall: two groceries which closed down within 3 years due to lack of customers; one bank which failed within 5 years after opening; one cigar store which lasted until 1954; and one post office which lasted until 1978." In 1961 there were only 8 business still open: four grocery stores - all went out Of Business within 5 years due to low demand; two gas stations - both went out Of Business within 10 years due to competition from other services offered by larger companies;; three restaurants - all closedwithin 15 years due primarily to high costs associated with running large restaurants near towns like Madison or La Crosse"; one lumber yard -closed down within 25 years." Platteville is located in the town of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. It was founded by Captain David Thompson in 1795. The town became a county seat in 1853 and then a city in 1907. The population was 30,000 when it became a city, and it has grown to more than 60,000 today. The first settlers to Platteville were Captains David Thompson and John Roemer. They arrived on horseback from the east in early 1795 and built a log cabin near the present day intersection of West State Street and North Douglas Drive. The original plat for the town was filed on October 25, 1795 by Captain David Thompson with Simon & Schuster as his agent. It laid out what is now Menomonee Falls Township and included land north of Douglas Drive including what is now downtown Platteville. The first residents of Platteville were laid out into lots on December 15, 1795 by Simon & Schuster’s John Roemer under an agreement made with Captains David Thompson and John Roemer during their visit to Menomonee Falls that week following their arrival from the east coast. There were six lots designated for purchase within the initial plat boundaries which are still extant today: lot 1 north of Douglas Drive; lot 2 east of Douglas Drvr.; lot 3 south of Douglas Drvr.; lot 4 west of State Sttreet; lot 5 across from Griggs Brewery; and lot 6 northeast off North Douglas Drvr.. Some other early settlers include Major James Neuman who settled on Lots 7-10 along State Street just south of where its current intersection stands today; Moses Roe settled Lot 11 opposite Griggs Brewery; Samuel Smithsettled Lots 12-16 near campus where he built his house currently known as Shurtleff Hall (now part of Northwestern University); Reverend Zephyr Teachman established himself at Lots 17-19 southwest corner North Main Street (); while also settling much later at Lots 25-27 off Delaware Ave., just east side Of Spring Creek Road now known as Division Street .(Please see accompanying map.) Since platting took place there have been many changes to Platteville's layout including annexations adjacent to neighboring towns such as Appleton (now Racine) in 1854 followed by Menomonee Falls annexation in 1867 which gave rise to what is now downtown Platteville’s nucleus – Platt Park which extended all around eastern edge of current day Menomonee Falls before ending up extending northwestward past Lake Michigan into Illinois territory annexed by Milwaukee County some years later Additionally an interchange was constructed at South Main Street/Douglas Boulevard between Appleton Avenue (later Racine Avenue) westbound traffic entering Menomonee Falls heading towards downtown Platt Park from eastern edge / westbound traffic exiting Menomonee Falls heading towards downtown Platt Park from western edge / both directions alternated using this spot until 1957 when it opened up permanently as I-94 Alternate #1 . Finally after years prohibition efforts led to prohibition being repealed effective January 1st 1920 becoming effective February 15th1920 alcohol sales were allowed only inside new city limits not outside them giving rise eventually to what is currently DowntownPlatteville's second nucleus – Waterfront District consisting principally onlyof surface parking spaces immediately adjacentto river front regardlessofthe presenceofthewaterfrontparkscurrently situatetothewestsideofthedowntown platted area) - thus leaving DowntownPlatteVILLE essentially unchanged since its founding even though alternate routes throughMenomeneeFallsandMilwaukeearestillavailable
Platteville was founded in 1836 by the Potawatomi Indians. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, thanks to its location on the banks of the Missouri River. By 1870, Platteville had a population of 5,000 people and was home to two banks, a wharf, a post office, and several businesses. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Platteville underwent numerous changes due to its growing industrial sector. In 1902, the first electric streetlights were installed in Platteville. In 1907, the city began construction of its first public school. By 1912, platteville had reached its peak as an agricultural center with production of crops such as corn, beans, potatoes, wheaten flour, oats and other goods distributed throughout central Wisconsin. However, during World War Iboth Germany and Austria-Hungary declared war on Americaand Europe resulting in increased military activity within Plattevilleand other towns in central Wisconsin which led to economic decline. Despite this development however,,Platoveille continued to grow steadily through the 1920s until it reached its heyday as an important commercial node for central Wisconsinduring World War II when it experienced significant growth due to wartime stimulus programs
