The first settler in Platteville was James Ketchum on land donated by Isaac Goodrich and others in 1836. The townsite of Platteville was laid out by Joshua Brainard in 1837 and named for Colonel John C. Platte, a general in the Union army during the American Civil War. A post office called Plattesville was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. Plattesville had a Methodist churchdesktop from 1861 to 1865; plattevilians built it themselves. The railroad arrived through Platteville about 1870 and quickly became one of the most important transportation links between Milwaukee and Waukesha County. By 1900, the city had grown to include over 100 businesses and 2,000 people. In 1907, Mayor John Hickey Voter passed an ordinance allowing women to vote without their husbands' consent; this opened up many opportunities for women who wished to engage in political activity during that time period. -In 1916-1917 there were several high school dances held at City Hall which included dancing with boys from local stores as well as various other social events.-Mayor Hickey also allowed for public parks to be developed throughout town so that people could enjoy open space.– After World War I when downtown business declined due largely to increased competition from neighboring cities,, Mayor Hickey approved plans by developers to build hundreds of homes along Clybourn Ave., creating what is now known as North Side Park

The plat of land that is now called Platteville was first sold to Peter Witt in 1795. The village of Platteville began to form around this time. In 1827, the plat of land that is now known as platteville was changed from being part of illeksa Township to being part of nearby Winnebago County. In 1847, the population of Platteville had grown to 350 people and in 1850, it had increased to 500 people. In 1852, when Winnebago County was created, platteville became an incorporated town with its own government. By 1863, the population had reached 1,200 people and by 1865, it had reached 2,000 people. On May 10th of that year, a fire destroyed most of the buildings in the town center after starting from a small stovepipe on Main Street.
