Platteville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, population 8,531 at the 2010 census. The plat for Platteville was filed in 1847 and is dated December 3, 1847. At that time it was part of the Mayflower Township. The first settler in Platteville was John Prentice who arrived on July 4, 1836. He built a cabin on what is now State Road K30 and called it "Prentice's Ford". The name "Platteville" was given to the town by James Hennepin after he purchase land from the Wabash River company near present day Union High School. The first post office in Platteville was established in 1846, and named New Harmony because it had been moved from its original location east of Sioux City to this new site north of there by order of United States Postmaster General Nicholas Biddle as a way to reduce smuggling activity along the Missouri River connecting Iowa with Illinois andMinnesota. In 1865, when platting began for towns throughout Wisconsin, Platteville became one of many located on the eastern border of Madison County which would form the town limits later that year. It grew rapidly due to lumbering operations which were conducted primarily along Wisconsin's riverside counties such as Douglas and Milwaukee County until World War II when those industries faded away due to competition from other states' pulp mills or better technology pursued by Advanced Engineering Laboratories (AEL). Platteville is a town located in the town of Platteville, in Dodge County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. At one time it was part of the Racine-Oneida School District. On November 3, 1854, platting began for what would become Platteville and only consisted of a few acres around the current downtown area. It wasn’t until 1876 that platting became an official process with voting by citizens. The first settler to arrive in what is now Platteville was John Hickey on April 12, 1836. He and his family were pioneers who founded Hickey City on the east side of present day Platteville from land grant from President James Kapp of Milwaukee. In 1840 John Fenton bought some more land south of where he lived and platted his own town called “Fenton” on July 2nd which included parts of today’s downtown area including the State Capitol Building and Monroe Street – these areas are now within the boundaries of Platteville proper. In 1851 Vinton Schrimpf settled in what is now northwest corner intersection of Second Avenue (now West First Street) and North Seventh Street; this area later became known as Schrimpf Addition. Here he built a sawmill which remain active to this day across from Old Chicago Cemetery off Wabash Avenue near Northwest Corner Streetsite #2A (now run down NW corner lot next to Pawleys Park). The first post office in Platteville opened on September 13th, 1850 with Wm Blythe as its first Agent/Recorder/Envoy Extraordinary & representing Territorial Government at that time residing at No 8 Union Place opposite University Block then being used by residents for general purposes before becoming Post Office Room No 5 Main Street also Owned By Mr Blythe prior to closing December 15th 1850 due To Congestion caused by increase in mail volume resulting from growth & development associated with early settlers living close together including military soldiers barracks etc.– See Notices In Papers Of That Day For Additional Details! (See map attached) The following yearplans were drawn up for platting west side river but no action taken until late summer1852 when Neely Gardiner came overland wagon train & purchased 400 acres @NW endofWabash Ave from banditti leader Black Hawk who had occupied sections adjoining White Settlement earlier that year about west side river mouth just northwest corner lots bordering Illinois Rd also owned by Neely Gardiner see map attached) By October 10th all final plans had been made for platting west sideriver weir but again no action taken until Feb 25th 1853 when Dr John Sibley arrived overland wagon train & purchased 500 acres @SW endofWabash Ave from Black Hawk also owning section along river bank just northwest corner lots bordering Illinois Rd see map attached) This purchase was followed soon thereafter by another overland wagontrain led by Adam Cushing arriving on February 28th1853 @NW endofWabash Ave from Council Bluffs IA via Rock Island MO bringing total number sold NE Wisconsin River Valley including Plattenburgh pastures 9 miles long extending alongWI River shoreline antibodies agrarian society metallurgical works lumber mill blackhawk
