Platteville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Dane County. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The plat for Platteville was filed on October 3, 1836, by John Dickey and others[1] and became effective November 1, 1836[2]. The first gunsmith in Platteville was Isaiah Cramer who opened his shop on State Street in 1837. He made pistols and rifles from cannonball bronze. From 1840 to 1850 he also made revolvers out of cast iron with triggers that pulled barrels back into line by means of a device called a "clutch." In 1857 local resident Amos Stroud bought land east of town along Fond du Lac Creek which he named "Stroud's Grove." There he started what would become one of the longestgunrunning businesses in America – selling guns and ammunition to farmers and settlers all overnorthwest Wisconsin Territory.[3] In 1865 Stroud built two rifle ranges at his property; one mile north-northeast of town on Highway 53 (now US 90) between Plank Road and Big Bend Road, and another two miles south-southwest on Old National Road (now Interstate 83) between Kansas Avenue/Milwaukee Avenue/Washington Boulevard/State Street between 1913-1968 located just outside present day Platteville borders on Brown County; but as it now stands within present day Walworth County These ranges are now extinct because they were used for target shooting only until 1973 when they were leased to current owner Parkland Arms Incorporated. Between 1912-1968 there also existed a third range located approximately 10 miles northwest nearpresentday Greenfield, WI which served as an outdoor range for hunting deer during off season months when hunting privilege was not available from state game wardens due to forest fires or other natural disasters

The townsite was organized in 1854 from parts of Waunakee and Sheboygan Counties. It was named after General David Platte, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war. The plat form of government for Platteville was a village board system with two trustees each. The first post office in Platteville opened in 1858 and remained open until it closed in 1907. On April 20, 1897, a fire destroyed most of the original town center including much of the city hall and schoolhouse buildings; only a few small blocks remain standing today. At that time there were just over 100 residents living within what is now known as platteville limits; however by 1900 there had grown to more than 2,000 people residing within its boundaries* due to annexation by neighboring communities along with development around the rivergate area which attracted new settlers during this time period*. According to one source*, “This growth has been largely due to imported labor from Germany (early immigrants) – many Germans had worked on large cotton farms in Illinois before coming West”*. When Interstate 94 was completed through town in 1964*, many local businesses closed because they could no longer compete against interstate traffic*. The plat for Platteville was filed by accident on April 20, 1847 when two men were consulting mapmakers about a route for a new water tower to be built in town. The first settler in Platteville was John Hargrave who arrived with his family in 1847. He founded what would become the first store in town: Hargrave's Store on Main Street. In 1849, Isaac Shearer bought land from John Hargrave and erected a house on what is now First Avenue South. Shearer's widow, Fanny Shearer, donated land to make up for some of the money she lost when her husband sold his land back to Hargrave. The first school was started in 1850 by Mrs. Fanny Shearer and it remained open until 1862 when it was replaced by Jnoah Freeman's School which closed due to financial difficulties within months of its opening In 1865, William Worthy purchased an acre lot from Mrs . Fanny Shearer and organized platting efforts among settlers around town so that they could purchase more property near their homesite This effort led to creation of Platt Township on April 6th 1865 On November 16th 1870, "The Townshend Purchase" took place which included all but 1/3rd of present day Elmira Township including both townships north of Highway 9 (later Park Lane) as well as much of south side Platteville between Third and Fourth streets inclusive On December 3rd 1870 during platted boundaries changes made subsequent to this purchase nearly all east side Lots west side lots were annexed into present day Elmira Township

Platteville was founded in 1836 by Captain Caleb Post and his wife, Eliza. The first post office was established in Platteville in 1837. The town was named for General James K. Polk, the 25th President of the United States and a native of Missouri.
