Platteville is located in the town of Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1854 by John and Lillie platte brothers as a sawmill and gristmill. The plattevilles were named after Captain James H. Platte, who was a military officer and member of the United States Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1875, the Platts turned their mill into a flour mill. The mill closed in 1951 but has been reopened several times since then. The mill produced flour for local markets until 1978 when it ceased operations due to safety concerns with its old equipment. The mills building still stands today and is used as a museum/preservation barn. The first settler in what would become Platteville was John platte who arrived from Ohio on July 8, 1854. He built a log cabin near where he now sits on land granted to him by the government for $200USD+. John's son James also settled in Platteville around this time; his son James Jr., also called "Jimmie", erected a log cabin about three miles east of where Platteville now stands on August 4, 1855 (Broom's map #2). By 1860, there were at least six families living in or near what became Platteville: four platses, one nigger (or mulatto), two Germans, and one Irishman all lived together within walking distance of each other (Galloway map #1). In 1862, the US Government gave an acreage grant to JH & Lillie platte brothers for £100USD+. This tract includes what is now known as "Platteville". On October 15th of that year they laid out Block 9 on this parcel 0f land which included current day blocks 1-8 north side of river west side (.pdf). All settlers had to pay 6% federal taxes ($4 per head) plus 50 cents apportioned towards costs such as roads etc…and contributed an additional 3% towards anything else including church expenses which totaled $10 per family ($50 + $6 = $78) This new village quickly grew with many people coming from surrounding towns looking for fertile farmland; however due to bad weather conditions often times early crops would not germinate so settlers resorted to hunting game or gathering wild plants for food(Parrish map #2). In 1865 water was finally piped into town through oak swamp just south of present day State Fairgrounds! On November 20th JH & Lillie platter donated another 160 acres west of their initial farmstead along Clear Creek to help fund construction of Green Bay’s first public school – “The Good Shepherd School” begun September 28th 1865 under superintendent Hiram Smead (Draper map #5 pgs 45-47). Classes began on October 10th with Justus Pohlman teaching 5th grade math while Mr White taught 6th grade English Language arts This school continued until 1903 when it moved across I Street onto new property being developed today adjacent to County Courthouse . That same year President Ulysses S Grant made room available at Soldiers' Home for 150 boys unable or unwilling to attend school because Of Civil War wounds Finally effective instruction could be provided here too starting in 1901 thanks largely to cooperation between Mrs Fenton [sic] Dorman [sic] and Miss Anna Bicknell who volunteered her services teaching 7th grade German language arts next door at Soldiers' Home . On October 14TH 1870 Hermann Weiser donated 60 acres adjoining his farmstead southeast cornerof E Main Street & South Side Road NW [northwest corner], providing future Blocks 10 - 16 which are currently part of City Limits This donation freed up more than 1/3rdsection extending northeasterly 3 rods…..land lying between these 2 tracts forms present day Blocks 17 - 19″ (Fenton maps vol II pg 397-398) james harrison donated 95 additional acres including all remaining blocks 20 thru 24 giving us our current city limits !!!!! So finally we have come full circle back home……….to our original homestead site located easterly 3 rodsNW from modern day block 25″
