Platteville is a town in the state of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Stout metropolitan area. The Town of Platteville was organized on November 3, 1836, by commissioners from Green Bay and Waukesha Counties. The name "Platteville" was chosen because it is located on a high plain near the eastern edge of what is now Racine County. platteville History The plat for Platteville was filed on March 12th, 1837 with John Prentice as President Judge and James Haggerty as clerk. On July 1st, 1838, plat has been amended to add two lots to north side of river running through town which were owned by Samuel Laughlin and wife Jane (Dalrymple) Laughlin. One lot went to John Slingerland and one lot went to Joseph Fenton who bought it from John Dalrymple on October 6th 1840. By February 16th 1861 there were 10 families living in Platteville with 175 acres (72 ha) cultivated including cornfields and dairy farms producing 4500 lbs/acre (.16 m3/ha). In 1862 an addition to town was made by purchase of property east of current river crossing just south of present day school building site- this land included 100 acres (40 ha) upland farmstead where Gideon Beere built his house in 1847- this property became known as Beere's Hill after Gideon’s son-law Cephus Beere who donated it to the Townspeople in 1886 Beare's Hill consists of a long low hill rising along the west side of today's High School campus that overlooks River Road which runs through town center
