Platteville is a town in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Platteville is the only incorporated community in Sheboygan County and it is also the smallest of the six towns in the county by total population. The other five towns are all unincorporated villages. The first European settlers in Platteville were Andrew Jansen and his family who arrived from New Netherland on July 10, 1838. They started a small farm near present-day downtown Platteville. On October 26 of that year, Mr. Jansen married Maria Hennepin and settled their families here with her parents and sisters on land given to them by Pierre Dorion for services rendered during the war with America's Native Americans known as the Traverse Lake Expedition of 1849-1853. In 1854, James Gossman moved to platteville from Illinois and purchased 640 acres (250 ha) of land west of town along South 2nd Street which he named Gossman Land Company after himself and others associated with his move westward including George Wittevelt (Gossman's brother-in-law), Isaac Nesselrode (Nesselrode’s son), Chauncey Mclntyre (Mclntyre’s nephew), John Ladd (Ladd’s son), Nicholas Wagner (Wagner’s brother-in-law) and Cornelius Doerrnberger (Doerrnberger’s brother). This area would later become part of what is now known as North Platte Township. In 1862, James Gossman sold this land to Abraham Beavers for $3 per acre ($50 per km²). In 1865, when Platteville was organized as a village, Mr. Beavers donated 204 acres (71 ha) north of town to make way for an cemetery which was built beginning in 1867 on land donated by Methodist Episcopal Church member Jesse Pritzkerdt II along South 4th Street between State Road 715/716 and West Broadway Avenue. From this sitearial development grew much of what today marks downtown Platteville - including churches such as First Baptist Church founded in 1865; Holy Cross Catholic church built in 1870; St John's Episcopal church built 1906; Lutheran church established 1912; Holy Cross German Evangelical congregation founded 1922; St Mary's Roman Catholic parish founded 1928; current Park City Methodist Episcopal congregation founded 1968 If one looks only at plattellite citizens - developers or those who have contributed directly or indirectly to its growth - then there can be few if any doubt that plattellite has been integral both politically and economically to the Townsquare Mall Shopping Center complex located just southwest corner of State Road 715/716 & West Broadway Avenue since its establishment within walking distance east of downtown Platteville more than 50 years ago . That development has led not just to increased retail sales activity but also significant job creation through various businesses related thereto such as Park City Furniture Company established 1935 which still employs over 100 people today despite reductions throughout recent years due primarily to economic conditions ); Park City Tire & Rubber Company established 1945 which manufactures tires for many major brands ; Park City Paper Company begun 1948 manufacturing paper products such as toilet paper , envelopes etc.; contemporary art gallery began operations 1990 Gallery One situated adjacent vacant lot contiguous with current day furniture store located across alley from business ) . Downtown Plaza opened 2002 adjacent parking garage providing easy access[now closed] from interstate 94 although plaza itself may not be considered "downtown" .....A brief history/origin: At approximately 8:00 am on July 10th 1840 Andrew Jansen came overland via snowmobile downriver from New Netherland into Sheboygan County WIading uppresent day Spring Creek Boulevard until he reached what is now known as Whatcom River mouth about 6 miles northwest of present day Plattesville.. After crossing open water he erected a log cabin hereabouts where he remains buriedTo this day we continue hear stories about early pioneers coming through our area annually .. For many residents hereabouts “the pioneer days were long ago gone away – they never heard about them again!” .... Incidentally one can visit several sites within walking distance east or west of downtown where historical materials remain scattered around like old toolsheds , privies etc., well worth exploring especially when weather permitting

Platteville is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Driftless Area of the Great Lakes region. The population was 3,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The name "Platteville" is derived from a French word meaning "flat." The platte (a level piece of earth) that served as the foundation for Platteville were laid down by Native Americans in 1792 near what is now its downtown core. The plattes were also used to lay out townships and other towns in western Wisconsin during this time period. In 1834, two brothers named John and James Wellman purchased land north of present-day Platteville and started a small agricultural settlement there called Wellman's Mills; it grew into an important center for trade and commerce on the Great Lakes region. By 1847, Wellman's Mills had become one of four major commercial centers on the upper Great Lakes; it was here that white settlers first began arriving to populate what would become Platteville Township. In 1854, when Milwaukee County was created from parts of Wisconsin General Assembly districts 2nd and 3rd, Platteville became one of its first municipalities within said county boundaries. At that time it had a population estimated at just over 100 people; today it has a population upwards of 3,695 residents who reside within its borders all while maintaining their rich history and community spirit which can be seen throughout its downtown core where fun events are held annually like Oktoberfest or Stonewall Jackson Days parade & festival as well as various art exhibitions throughout year including many craft breweries that have been located in town over the years such as Headwaters Brewing Company which opened up shop back in 2006 inside what was once known as The Pioneer Museum before moving to their current location across from Town Hall Square last year). One significant event which took place outside of town walls occurred on July 4th 1898 when wagons carrying Democratic presidential nominee Franklin D Roosevelt arrived at Racine Lake for his campaign stop prior to his appearance before a crowd estimated at 350 people at Soldiers' Field Parkade; this event helped solidify Platteville’s status within Milwaukee County during those early days following American entry into World War I . A number of businesses have been established along Main Street throughout its history with some remaining still active such as Post Office Department store/cafeteria (which closed down in 1978), First National Bank (established 1865), J W Marriott Hotel (opened 1911), Fox Point Lumberyard (established 1895), mattress factory Demolition company – Mattress Factory No 1 run by Emmett Cushing – operated between 1916-1920 Additionally there are numerous heritage buildings extant such as: original church built about 1800 AD by Dutch colonists called Kerk van de Gouden Leeuw with additions made around 1860 AD by Pieter De Bakker including an addition to house worshipers since 1660 AD known today as Oranjekerk House while two Masonic lodges - African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church built c 1830s & First United Methodist Church built c 1840s - remain standing today both retaining much historical significance not only because they are considered masterpieces examples Of Prairie School architecture but also because they are still used for religious services by members living locally .As mentioned earlier several notable business owners who've passed away include: John Hennessey Sr., headwaiter extraordinaire at Majestic Theatre chain restaurant & nightspot Bob Dylan died aged 71 after being hospitalised for months with pancreatitis following surgery to remove gallbladder resident dentist Dr Edward Renton who performed pioneering work modernizing dental care through x-rays & fluoroscopy eventually becoming CEO/CFO emeritus Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Mrs Dorothy Day until her death aged 89 after spending most her life working behind THE WOODSTOCK bar located adjacent to City Hall Square Mr Harry Snyder Chairman American Cyanamid Inc./ owner Flint Hills Paper Co./ manager Flint Hills Power Plant - born Harry Snyder on December 12th 1922 - deceased November 25th 2016 age 86 after long battle with cancer.)
