Platteville, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by John C. Platte and his brother James. The town grew quickly around the mill and trading post that John C. Platte built on the Sauk River. The plat of land for Platteville was surveyed in 1839 and purchased from the Sauk Indians by Captain David Walker of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. By 1840, plat had been filed with the county recorder and plat map of Platteville was created that year which still hangs in City Hall today! The first store opened in 1841 and soon there were two schools, a blacksmith shop, a grocery store, two churches, three hotels and ten or so homes! In 1845, one of John C’s sons developed a new way to make flour – baking soda! This new method made flour much more expensive but it also allowed for lots of local businesses to get started! The town continued to grow as other industries began to arrive such as cheese making, lumbering and wagon production! By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in Platteville! In 1924, when Milwaukee County was formed from part of Milwaukee County (including Racine) into its own entity, Platteville became an unincorporated community within the newly formed Milwaukee County. Today it remains an important part of our history because it is home to many civic organizations including the United States Post Office Department's Mail Branch located at 3015 N 76th Street (just east of State Street), which processes mail from all 50 states plus Puerto Rico; as well as numerous private agencies including Lutheran Social Services; Kosher Butcher Shop; American Legion Post #291 - currently operated by Cutlerstown Congregational Church -and several restaurants/bars/stores including ABC's Sports Bar & Grill serving local cuisine outfitted with large flat screens TV's throughout most days...the only thing missing are some live chickens :-)
The Platteville community was founded in 1837 by the brothers, Daniel and Lewis Platt. The town originally consisted of only a few homes and a mill. By 1840, the population had grown to over 100 people. In 1851, the first school was built in the town. The plat for Platteville was filed on November 2, 1853. On December 1,1855, the first post office opened in Platteville. In 1872, a railroad was constructed through Platteville and it soon became an important transportation hub for the area. In 1893, there were two schools in Platteville- one operated by private individuals and another by the government. In 1907, platted land around Platteville became part of what is now Clydeside County.
