It was named for Richard platte (a French word meaning "broad valley"), which led to its name being used as a meeting place for early settlers. The first post office was established in Platteville in 1858. In 1865, the town became part of Racine County and underwent several changes until it became an unincorporated community in 1907. When Racine County merged with Milwaukee County on April 1, 1998, Platteville remained an unincorporated community within Milwaukee County. Platteville is a town in the western Wisconsin area, located on the Platte River. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine–Kaukauna–West Allis metropolitan statistical area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Platteville were French traders in 1663 who came looking for fur trade. They named their new town after Pierre Marquette's trip through that region two years earlier, and it wasn't until 1793 that plat mapmakers started calling it "Platteville". The first settler in Platteville was John Hazen in 1836. He founded a log cabin and store on the east bank of the river. By 1840, there were nine settlers living in Platteville. In 1845, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led his cavalry detachment across the river and into present-day Kansas when he discovered gold near Topeka; as a result, many people abandoned their homes for good in that year. Aftermath of the Battle of Fort Scott (1862) saw many residents move westward overland to Dodge City or northward into Canada because they thought military service might be available there as part of The Sioux War. A few weeks later, when General Alfred Stevens relieved General Doniphan at Fort Riley following an attack by Confederate forces under General Earl Donelson against Union forces northeast of Wichita Falls, most all but one family from Platteville decided to move also – including Hazen himself and his three children who had stayed behind with their father. In 1868, four sisters from Platteland moved to Lecompton County Illinois after being left orphaned during fighting around St Louis during The American Civil War (see below). After some time living there they returned home and started a farm which prospered until 1901 when they sold it to Jens Jensen for $15000 cash plus another $6000 worth of stock options which he kept till 2002 when he donated it back to business improvement district platted by him and others with same name & purpose
Platteville was founded by the Smiths in 1836. The village grew up around a small community of farmers and their families. The first school was built in 1837, and the first store opened in 1840. By 1850, Platteville had about fifty residents. In 1860, the town passed an act authorizeing a post office and providing for elections for officials. The population grew rapidly after this, and by 1870 there were over one hundred people living in Platteville. In 1881, the platting of townships began, and Platteville became part of the new township of Uniontown. The population continued to grow until it peaked at over two thousand in 1920. After that point, it slowly declined until its present level of around 500 people. In recent years, however, there has been an increase in activity within the village center as well as within the surrounding agricultural areas; so much so that Platteville is now considered to be one of Wisconsin’s “urbancrossing communities” (meaning a community located on both sides of a major highway).
