On April 6, 1840, Platteville became a village and on February 12, 1851 it became a town. The first postmaster was James A. Goodspeed and the first justice of the peace was John Payson. The town's name comes from a Missouri River valley where settlers had been driven by Native Americans to build fur-trading posts in what is now central Wisconsin during the early 1800s. In 1836, when platting began for towns in Dane and Milwaukee counties near present-day Green Bay (then known as Racine), platter John Hennepin named his new settlement after General George Armstrong Custer's column which had just crossed the Dakota River into Minnesota that year and were en route to Tipoka Agency north of this location
