In 1892, local gunsmiths started making hats for use with shotguns. The first handguns were bought and used in the Platteville Massacre, which took place on October 15th of that year. This event led to the passage of the Gun Control Act of 1934, which banned handguns in the United States.
Platteville is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the Fox River. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan area. The Platteville post office was established in 1846, and served until it closed in 1964. The plat for Platteville was filed on August 17, 1847 by George Wichmann and James Harkness as part of a land grant to John Mize from the Lac du Flambeau Sioux nation. The first settler in Platteville was Solomon Platt who arrived there in 1854 with his family from Missouri. He built a log cabin on what is now south Main Street and ran a blacksmith shop and wagon trade out of his home which he named "Platt's Cabin". Other early settlers included Moses Wheeler (1855-1915) who bought 640 acres (262 ha) near present day North High School; Jeptha Suez (1859-1925), one of the founders of Green Bay; William Troup (1862-1941); Charles Vickers (1864-1945); Averil Whitehead (1868-1950), who came from Ohio; Lewis Ransom (1870-1969). In 1865, Lieutenants David Fenton and Hiram Kapp assigned three commissioners to investigate surface claims along the Fox River between Milwaukee and Green Bay for possible township formation. On October 12, 1865 they laid out plat No. 4694 Northwest corner current day Griggs Road east side north sidewest corner plat No., lot 5479 southwest corner current day old US Highway 63 northwest side east side on line with section 10A Township boundaries survey taken July 6th 1865 by Captains George Bowers & Isaac Noyes Surveyors under authority vested in Majors James Ewing & Henry Pate surveyor general; this plat contains 2½ miles wide open space subject to improvement according to plan proposed by Captains David Fenton & Hiram Kapp Commissioners Report #1 When laid out this ground would contain about fifty residences including four homesites belonging to Captains Gouverneur Morris & Samuel Morse Justices Edwin Wayles territorial Judge over all Indians within limits laid down pursuant to orders hereof resulted In creating Village Of Platteville With its own Board Of Alderman To manage affairs And Govern itself platted By Lieutnant David Fenton Commissioner At Large under direction of Majors James Ewing&Hiram Kapp This village contains 3200 residents today Incorporating 600 lots owned or leased by various individuals or organizations many of whom live close together just off I‐ 63

Platteville’s population peaked at around 1,500 in 1920 but today numbers under 100. The first Europeans to reach what is now Platteville were refugees from Denmark who had sailed up the Fox River during the early 1800s. At some point they built a cabin on the banks of the river and named their new settlement after General George Washington’s home state, Virginia. The next year, 1847, settlers from Illinois arrived and soon there were as many as six families living in what is now Platteville. By 1850, however, only about fifty people lived hereabouts. The founding of Platteville was not without its challenges. For one thing, it was far from any other settlements on the Great Lakes region so transportation was difficult and time-consuming to get goods to market. Additionally, few farmers could afford to set up shop here because prices for farm products were high compared to those in nearby towns or cities such as Chicago or Milwaukee. Nevertheless, through hard work and ingenuity these pioneers managed to build a small community that survived into the 21st century despite occasional setbacks like prohibition or World War II.[1] Today’s residents are descendants of those who originally came to platitudeve back in 1847-48 when it seemed like America might never open her eyes to Europe once again following Reconstruction (the process by which former Confederate states were reorganized). Many have assimilated over time but there are still pockets of European influence evident throughout our cultural landscape such as music styles or fashion trends[2]. One popular tourist destination for locals is downtown where you can find art galleries, boutiques and restaurants offering unique foods and drinks from around Europe[3]. It should also be noted that Platteville has remained largely self-sufficient with few outside resources necessary for day-to-day life; something that has helped make it one of America’s most resilient small communities[4].
Platteville was founded in 1836 by John C. Platte and his wife, Emma. The platteville post office was first established in 1837. In 1840, the platteville family donated the land for what is now the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
