In 1854, a group of men from Platteville, Wisconsin founded the town in honor of General John C. Fremont. The town was named after General Fremont's role in helping to unified the United States during the Mexican-American War. The town was originally built on the site of an old Native American trading post. In 1906, the Platteville Electric Cooperative was formed and began using power from hydroelectric generators at the nearby Pleasant Prairie Dam. Today, Platteville is one of Wisconsin's largest cities with a population of over 150,000 people.

Platteville was founded in 1837 and named for Captain George G. Platte. The first post office in Platteville was established in 1846. The town has a rich history that can be traced back to its early days as a frontier settlement. The community was founded on what is now the western edge of Platte Township on Muddy River. The original plat for Platteville was filed on July 8, 1837 by Captain George G. Platte and James Dickey, Sr.. At that time it consisted of only four buildings: a log cabin, a shop and two outhouses known as the old gristmill and sawmill (now called Community Hall). Captain George G. Platte played an important role in helping to create what today is considered one of the most vibrant townships in central Wisconsin – he donated land to make it possible for settlers to build homes and businesses thereabouts. He also helped contribute financially to many local charities through his donations of goods and services such as lumber, wheat flour, candles, soap bars, cheese etc., which remain popular tourist attractions today thanks to their unique flavor and history! In addition to its namesake captain – who helped shape Platterville into what it is today – other notable residents over time include Judge John Fenton (1888-1957), Mrs Florence Welch (1915-2001), Dr Archibald Macleod (1920-2008) & Dr Leslie Aiken (b 1945). Today’s best known resident may be Jim Henson who grew up here before moving on to Hollywood fame! There are numerous events taking place throughout the year including summer festivals such as Folk Festivals - featuring live music from performers from around WI each day - harvest fairs with traditional agricultural activities like corn husking/gathering/farming etc., golf tournaments/discussions about local issues during various sessions held at Town Hall during different months; plays produced by local theater groups;etc.?
