Platteville is a town in County of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,651 at the 2010 census. Platteville is located in the southeastern part of the county and is bordered to the north by Racine and to the south by West Allis. It lies within Lake County. The plat for Platteville was filed on May 14, 1855 by A.F. Leland and named for Colonel George Washington Platte (1765-1848). In 1856, John Prentice surveyed a piece of land east of what is now Platteville on the shores of Waukesha Bay. This tract became known as "Prentice's Prairie". In 1859, Ignatius Bixby sold 640 acres (250 hectares) northeast of present-day Platteville to Isaac Gage bulkler for $5 per acre ($47 thousand today). Gage laid out a system called Gage Township with four farms: Goodpasture, Apple orchard, Pemberton (now parts of West Allis), and Bainbridge (now parts of Racine). The first settler in Gage Township was James Gamble who platted it on July 24, 1859. The late 1800s saw a large population growth in Platteville due to new technology inventions such as photography and automobiles which brought people together from all over America to experience these new products first hand On July 1st 1907 there were over 10 Junction Railroads employees at an event organized by City Councilman Charles Danforth that opened up town square On August 20th 1907 an order was given prohibiting any further public meetings without written consent from Mayor Hiram Naylor until after he had inspected each house A new school building was built in 1906-07 which served as both primary and secondary school until 1963 when Riverwoods Elementary School replaced it After high school students continued attending Riverwoods until their graduation in 1957 then going onto other colleges or universities

By 1945, all but a few major manufacturers of optical instruments had stopped production due to wartime competition from television sets and other electronic equipment. The town was founded by Anthony J. Platte in 1836 as a result of land sales conducted by John Stevens between him and James Wright on October 15, 1835. platteville became a village in 1840, and then a town in 1850. The original plat for Platteville Township was filed on November 5, 1856 with Waukesha County commissioners John Slingerland and Isaac Hoeschner as trustees On March 14, 1857, Platteville became one of twelve towns to form Racine County when it was organized from parts of Ozaukee and Milwaukee counties.. Platteville lost its status as a separate municipality after it merged with neighboring Racine on February 1, 1907 pursuant to an act of the Wisconsin State Legislature known as the "Racine Consolidation Act". At that time there were 8 municipalities within Racine County; however only 3 remain today: Platt City (dissolved 1905), Hechtman (deceased 1963) and Prairie View A&M University (opened 1959). The other 5 municipalities were added during annexation campaigns following World War II: Elkhorn Heights (1946), Goodhue (1948), Grafton (1953), Winnetka Heights (1959) and Oshkosh(1964).
The platteville area was first settled by the Potawatomi tribe in the 1830s. The town of Platteville was founded in 1854, and it grew rapidly during the late 19th century. In 1902, the town incorporated as a city, and it has remained an important community to this day.
