A grant from the British government in 1787 allowed for a village on the west side of Green Bay to be founded by Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing and his family. They named it after General James Wilkinson's victory at Monmouth Court House over George Washington's army on July 4, 1777; Wilkinson had been lieutenant colonel of British forces that day. In 1847, Platteville became one of twelve villages consolidated into the Town of Brookfield under then-Mayor Drury Houghton. The name for Platteville originated with local landowner Amos Prentice who donated two acres (0.8 km2) to become platting ground for a new village hall which would serve as an education center and meeting place for all of Brookfield Township; platting took place on April 15, 1847. The first settler to arrive in Platteville was Fenton Cushman who built a cabin on West First Street on October 10, 1848 After some debate between residents and trustees about whether or not to name their new village "Plato" after Plato Tschudi (1796-1868), vote was taken without objection and "Plato" was formally adopted as the name for Platteville on November 6th, 1848 by Trustees Isaac Wohlgemuth (1824-1889) and Horace Dodge (1827-1900). A post office called "Pequot" was established at Platteville in 1865, but it moved twice before settling permanently at its current location on Main Street in 1870 (). In 1895 patent #5649 from US Gov't gave rise to speculation that an oil well might be located nearby so construction began immediately upon receipt – wellLogic drilled 3 wells within months! By 1899 only 1/3rd complete with water test results still pending there were calls for another referendum asking residents if they wanted their own school district instead but this proposal too failed when nearly everyone turned out against it including several prominent citizens such as Mayor Houghton himself! On December 12th 1907 a fire started while men were working near the daily grocery store building; no one was injured thankfully but both stores sustained extensive damage which included $10K worth of goods lost including saddles, buggy parts etc.; due to this event town leaders decided that community firefighting equipment should be purchased instead of relying solely upon volunteerism so engine company PemberTON arrived January 9th 1908; however just days later another large brush fire broke out northwest corner lot making access impossible so engines returned February 11th 1908 turning back once again until finally extinguishing blaze around 2am March 8th 1908!). Although damages amounted to just $30 ($US today) most people felt that having two stores destroyed plus loss of income must have been very discouraging indeed!. For many years after this tragedy [the early 20th century] property values plummeted because few people could pass up an opportunity to buy cheaply damaged homes which resulted in some abandoned buildings becoming popular tourist attractions! As recently as 1950s there were still reports about ghost activity living inside various abandoned buildings though nowadays these reports are more likely attributed to modern scares such as haunted houses or active shooters
