The name comes from the Potawatomi word pewa-wee which means 'place where there is water' and 'shoreline'. Jacob de Wit arrived in 1795 with his family and built a cabin on the north side of Lake Michigan near present day Fond du Lac. He named his settlement after himself, Pieter Peebleswijk Duitschlandt or De Wit's Village (now known as North Side). In 1836, John Sault settled here and named it for himself, John Sault's Village (now downtown). In 1857, Abraham Lincoln visited Pewaukee while he was campaigning for reelection as President of the United States. At that time, he stopped at this location to campaign and drink from Lake Michigan. Afterward, he announced that if elected President he would build a new Capitol building in Washington D.C., which eventually became the White House. That event is still celebrated each year by hosting a public rally along Calumet Avenue NW between First National Bank and Marquette University until recent years around 9:00am PDT/12:00pm EDT under City Hall Park across from State Fair Park

The history of Pewaukee dates back to 1851 when it was organized as a hamlet on the east side of Milwaukee River. The town name derived from an early settler, Isaac Pewelee. In 1871, the city of Milwaukee annexed Pewaukee and most of north-central and eastern Cook County. That same year, James Hickey founded the Townshend Paper Company in what is now downtown Fox Point in Pewaukee with four acres (16,000 m²). The paper company became one of the largest paper companies in America and from 1898 until its sale to Time Warner in 1996 had a printing plant on Clybourn Street near Waukesha Avenue where it continued to produce newspapers until 2003. In 1941, during World War II, local plants made munitions for the war effort such as radios and clothing for servicemen; however many people left after Pearl Harbor because they were not aware that production would resume once peace returned. Some citizens decided to stay even though their livelihoods were based upon manufacturing munitions which could go away at any time due to wartime restrictions placed on America by Great Britain and other allies following World War II. A small group of these families pooled resources together to start a business called "Bootlegger's Brewery" which brewed craft beer while still producing munitions products under contract with other companies throughout much of 1945-46; however this venture failed because no new customers came through establishment or markets overcapacity developed by those prior businesses that had been established before troops invaded Normandy six months earlier! This failure led some residents who had remained behind during prohibition era days (1930s) when alcohol was available for purchase only at grog bars/ speakeasies - now known as breweries - to begin organizing themselves into what became known as "the old school" faction withintown politics around 1950s-1960s; this faction wanted reversion back to Prohibition era practices while others wanted more open access to education opportunities available today thru WI state government courtesy of late great Chief Justice Earl Warren's decision in "Wisconsin v Reinhardt" (1964). Despite differences withintown politics between 1950s-1960s about how best implementation of campaign finance laws should be done - cf current day Green Party candidates running for office - all factions withintown political activity ultimately coalesced around cigaret smoking ban referendum question being put on ballots statewide beginning in 1962 referenda permitted without voter knowledge regarding tobacco content inside packages sold through retail outlets...resulting in passage constitutional amendment banning smoking indoors inside any structure used primarily for economic purposes including cigar stores starting January 1st 1965 [- note: referendum outcome cited does not reflect true intent or result governing use/purchaseof cigars] A smaller number began growing farmers' markets outside their homes selling fresh fruits and vegetables grown right there on property or outside grocery stores adjacent thereto during 1970’s & 1980’s [note: green party candidate Russ Feininger has run unsuccessfully against incumbent Grover Norquist several times]. They grew larger each decade through initiatives such as creating ordinance requiring posting prices for items sold at farmers' markets; also increasing funding source available thru tax increment financing program designed specifically towards marketing agriculture products & promoting rural economy thru development assistance awards granted pursuant to Wis Statutes..AfterFeininger first won election running unopposed as mayoralty candidate 3rd term (2002), he convened City Council meeting presided over by then Mayor Tom Barrett where he recommended establishing market garden plot adjacent theretoon Main Street corner with Waukesha Avenue providing cover from possible vandalism incidents caused by rival gangs]; subsequently passing ordinance sponsored by Feininger becoming effective May 5th 2002 [note: NOTE: cosponsored bill introduced 3rd term but never passed ].
