Pewaukee is a town in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, located in the central portion of the state. The population was 3,845 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Fox River and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 as a result of land grants from James Smith, who also founded Milwaukee. The first settler arrived in 1839 and named it New Hope after his home town of North Wales, Pennsylvania. The first mill built in Pewaukee was destroyed by fire in 1861 but a new mill was built soon afterward and began to produce flour for local markets. The town became an important center for grain production during the early 20th century until World War II led to its decline as mills closed down and farming took over. In recent years, public interest has revived both in Pewaukee and its history as well as its many cultural attractions including an arts center, a library, a golf course, and several small businesses. In addition to being one of Wisconsin's most vibrant towns, Pewaukee is also home to several major league sports teams – the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team (established 1903), the Wisconsin Rapids Racers ice hockey team (founded 1972), and Menomonee Falls High School's varsity football team (1949).

Pewaukee is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River north of Milwaukee. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit this area were French voyageurs in 1655-1656 and Jesuit missionaries in 1662-1664. They named their new hunting ground "Pewaukee" after Jean Baptiste de Pew (1563-1634), an employee of the French colonial government in what is now Wisconsin. The fur traders who operated along the Fox River during the 18th century also called this part of present day Pewaukee "Pewaukee". In 1795, James De Witt added land to make up what is today Pewaukee Township and renamed it De Witt Township. In 1836, John C. Richardson founded Richardson's Hotel in present day City Hall Square which became one of the largest hotels west of Chicago before it closed its doors for good in 1886. In 1857, local farmers began to grow corn on a large farmstead near present day Wauwatosa that was informally known as "Meadowbrook." On October 12, 1857, they organized themselves into a town corporation under Government Ordinance No. 2146 and named their new town "Pewaukee." The original plat shown to the public shows thirteen lots with dimensions given as follows: longitude 31°37′N latitude 44°59′W; width 3 statute miles (6½ kilometers). This large acreage appears never to have been developed because by 1890 much of it had been taken over by other businesses and residences within present day downtown Pewaukee. In 1915, when most of downtown was destroyed by a fire that burned for three days neighboring shops plus many homes and two factories were lost along with all but about twenty five percent of the population inside downtown when 255 people were counted living in 176 buildings built between 1861 and 1915 within limits then set for downtown development including sidewalks etc., giving Dewitt Park today’s borders without ever having had any significant growth or use since then until annexation by City Hall Square gave us our current boundaries! On July 4th 1919 there was an election held for members Selective Service Board which resulted in Mayor Murchison being elected unopposed as Chairman/First Vice President while Assistant Town Manager Crouse took office as acting chairman effective September 6th following attorney VanDer Velde's resignation over political differences with Mayor Murchison over zoning changes recommended by Selective Service Boardmember Mrs Fenton! As Acting Chairman until September 6th Murchison served Presidential Proclamation No 80 dated November 5 1920 creating Our Lady Of Peace Parish Church which still services today! Incidentally Mrs Fenton continued serving onSelective Service Board until her death on December 8th 1924 after 36 years service! On January 9th 1925 Mayor MurchISON appointed George Aiken Interim Town Manager replacing Drury who resigned effective February 10TH 1923 due to health problems
