Pewaukee is a town in Pulaski County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area. The first people to live in Pewaukee were the Potawatomi and Menominee Indians. They were followed by the English in 1836, who erected a cabin on what is now State Road 9 near present-day Pewaukee Lake. The first school in Pewaukee was established in 1857. The town was named for Nathaniel Pemberton, an early settler and landowner thereabouts. In 1881, a post office called "Pewaukee" was opened at a location south of present-day Forest Park Avenue on Whitefish Bayou. The name change came about due to objections from residents of nearby West Allis who had lobbied for the original name to be kept as an apparent insult to their Indian neighbors (the Potawatomi used "Peshawar" as their tribal name). In 1865, William Jernigan founded the Jernigan Manufacturing Company which made shotguns and other firearms products out of wood pulp from his farm near present-day Watertown. He also developed quarries hereabouts and furnished lumber for shipbuilding then conducted transportation services ashore with steamboats until about 1900 when he abandoned those activities entirely preferring horse drawn wagon transportation over railroads; this preference would continue until after World War II when electricity became available making trucking unnecessary Some attribute this decision to Jernigan's opposition during that time period to motor vehicles becoming more popular than horses pulling wagons across North Americadue primarily to advances in technology since then

Weis founded the Weis Barber Shop on Washington Street in Pewaukee which became the nucleus for what is now known as Weis & Sons Hardware Store. In 1896, Wm. P. Smith started up the Smith Printing Office in downtown Pewaukee which later became known as The News-Herald Newspaper Corporation. In 1951, Philip Tilton purchased The News-Herald from Mr. Smith and changed its name to The Tribune Newspaper Company after becoming its president and CEO. A new building was built on State Street in downtown Pewaukee in 1955 which served as the company’s headquarters until 1978 when it moved to their current location at 601 E First St., Suite 204, Milwaukee, WI 53202-0001

He and his family built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. A few years later, he and his wife purchased land east of present day Wauwatosa Avenue, which they named Pewsamie after their home town in England. Their children grew up here and raised families until 1907 when they sold all their holdings to developer George Allis for $4,000 dollars. In 1911, Allis donated land to the city of Milwaukee for use as an industrial park including a factory for his new paper-making company, Allis Paper Company Limited (APCL). The town prospered thanks to its proximity to APCL and other manufacturing facilities until World War II when it lost its status as an agricultural center due to technological changes in printing technology that made books more efficient than ever before. By 1970, Pewaukee had practically disappeared as a community due to rapid growth within nearby Milwaukee County and suburban development around it. However, over time there has been renewed interest in this small community due to its unique history and residents' sense of warmth and friendliness

Pewaukee, Wisconsin was first settled in 1836 by the Potawatomi tribe. The town of Pewaukee was named for Captain John Pew and his family. The first post office in Pewaukee was established in 1839. In 1865, the city of Waukesha was founded nearby, and soon after, the towns of Pewaukee and Waukesha merged to form the new city of Milwaukee.
