Pewaukee is a small town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. Pewaukee is the smallest of the ten wards in the city of Milwaukee. The first permanent settler in what is now Pewaukee was John Pemberton who arrived in 1836 and named his farm "Pebworth". The first post office was established in 1839 and was called New Albion. In 1856, a railroad line arrived through Pewaukee and brought with it new settlers, including George Hargrave who named his farm "Hargrave's Prairie". In 1872, Isaac Meyers founded a grocery store on Prairie Avenue near Waukesha Avenue. By 1880, Meyers had four grocery stores and twenty-six businesses. In 1906, Adolphus Cramer opened a dry goods store on Superior Boulevard which became one of the largest retailers in town. By 1920 there were twelve stores; by 1930 there were thirty-eight stores. In 1951, the Town Council voted to rename their community "Pewaukee" after Alfred Smedley Phelps Jr., an American industrialist who had made major contributions to Milwaukee County via his company Phelps Dodge Corporation (later known as Peabody Energy). At that time Pewaukee consisted of only three neighborhoods: Beechwood Park (northwest corner of First Street and Third Avenue), Marshfield (southwest corner of First Street and Fourth Avenue), and Friendship Heights (east side of Second Street between North Highways 16th and 17th Streets). The first residents moved into their newly built homes during 1951-1952
Pewaukee was founded in 1851 as a small town on the east side of the Milwaukee River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1875 it had become an incorporated city. In 1916, Pewaukee became one of the first municipalities in Wisconsin to adopt aChristmas Day holiday.
