In 1835, Jonas Sibley opened a store at Third and Main Streets which became one of the largest businesses in town until it closed in 1865. In 1840, John Hodge established an sawmill on the Fox River adjacent to what is now known as Hodge Park; this mill continued to produce lumber until it closed in 1955. The early mills produced both cotton textiles (which were trucked downriver) and lumber for building projects such as churches and schools throughout central Wisconsin until after World War II when lumber production shifted towards housing construction due to increased demand for wood products worldwide Pewaukee was incorporated as a village in 1855 but disbanded due to lack of support from other villages within the Driftless Zone

He named it after his father-in-law, James Marshall of Philadelphia. In 1849, William Linn founded a gristmill on the west side of the river and named it "Linn's Mill". The first store in Pewaukee was opened by Wm. Fenton in 1857. In 1860, Josiah Lehman founded what is now Lehman's grocery store on North Third Street in Pewaukee with $5 worth of groceries from his brother Jacob Lehman. That same year, he also started a small flour mill on West Fourth Street near where he currently stands as well as other businesses such as a livery stable and harness shop. In 1865, George Romney set up an ice cream parlor at 3rd and Menomonee Streets which became one of downtown Milwaukee's most popular tourist attractions for years to come In 1876, David Starr Jordan moved into his family’s farmhouse northeast of town along State Road 39 between Menomonee Falls and Appleton (now known as Highway 55). He began operations as a grain elevator operator before moving into real estate development in 1907 when he acquired 8 acres (3 ha) north of town off State Road 169 which became Jordan Park today He died there two years later at age 80 while still majority shareholder with his son Wesley Jarrett who continued operations until 1979 Today much of what remains from David Starr Jordan’s days are found within what is now PBS Middle School across from Interstate 94 headquarters just south of Town Center Drive On July 15th 1915 local boy Ernst Stützler enlisted with World War I veteran Danbury Reifenstein for service at Camp Ripon under command Major General John J Pershing . On October 24th 1916 Stützler received orders to report back to camp immediately upon arrival . A few days later he arrived at Nisswa Army Ammunition Plant located about 12 miles southeast of Camp Ripon but never reached their base because due to bad weather they had To Do List number 2 which involved taking prisoners over open water crossing point that day instead Ernst boarded coach driven by Sergeant First Class Lewis Hinebaugh all night long only arriving safely at battalion post Hospital early next morning when major general stopped bus
Pewaukee was first settled in 1836 and named for John Pew, a British settler. The town was organized as a village in 1854 and became a city in 1907. In the 1960s, Pewaukee became one of the first communities to implement desegregation plans in Wisconsin.
