Pewaukee is a town in Wisconsin, U.S.A., on the Fox River. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The first settler in Pewaukee was John and Eliza Schmitz who arrived in 1838 from Germany on the Slingerland ship "Fenwick". They were followed by their children, Johann and Anna Schmitz, in 1840. The Schmitzes bought 640 acres (260 ha) of land from Daniel Kapp near what is now downtown Pewaukee and built a log cabin there in 1846. In 1850 they married Mary Cushman and started to grow crops on their new land; they also began to build a house which remains standing today on Fourth Street between Waukesha Avenue and Lake Michigan Boulevard. In 1855 John Schmitz died suddenly; his wife continued to farm with her five children until her death in 1896. After her death, three of the children—Hermann (1857-1941), Alice (1859-1937) and Otto (1862-1945)—ran the farm together until it passed away into private hands several times before finally being sold to Maurice Evers in 1928 for $10,000 (). Maurice Evers leased it back to his brother Julius for two years before selling it back to Maurice Evers' son Julius II who kept it until he sold it again to Harry Wegner in 1965 for $27,500 (). Harry Wegner later developed it into an apartment complex called "The Park" which still stands today across Third Street from its original location as a schoolhouse). Pewaukee has been home to several businesses including The German Bakery & Cafe (), Wedgewood Furniture (), Pabst Brewing () and Great Lakes Brewery (). Along with West Allis, Milwaukee County forms the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area which had a population of over 100 million people as of 2010
