Pewaukee is a town in the Wisconsin region of the United States. It has a population of 9,512 as of the 2010 census. The name means "place where Birch trees grow." In 1851, Samuel Bowles purchased 200 acres (81 hectares) of land in what is now Pewaukee and built a small cabin. He named it Pewsaukee after his wife's maiden name. In 1872, John Slingerland bought property in what is now Pewaukee and built an even smaller cabin. He also named it Pewsaukee after his wife's maiden name. In 1907, Averill Harriman bought land in what is now Pewaukee from Samuel Bowles and established Harriman Dairy there. The first post office was established at Pewsaukee in 1912. The town was incorporated on April 14, 1915. The original residents were farmers who raised hay and cows for their livestock; later businesses included a millinery store, meat market, auto parts store, gas station/convenience store/delivery service, Lutheran church (built 1927), bowling alley (opened 1939), and one homebuilder ( builder started 1955). The economy changed with World War II when many men went to work in the military or became engaged in heavy industry; afterward the economy slowly improved until the early 2000s when there was an increase in crime and a decrease in jobs opportunities due to technological advancements such as online shopping

Pewaukee is a small town in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,391 at the 2010 census. The community is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Pewaukee was founded in 1854 as a company town for workers on the new Milwaukee & Waukesha Railroad. It became a village in 1907 and an incorporated municipality in 1957. The earliest settlers were elements of the Sauk and Menomonee bands of Native Americans who had been living near present-day Pewaukee since prehistory. They named their village after one of their chiefs, "Pewa" (meaning "water"). The first settler to arrive in what is now Pewaukee was John Merrill, bringing with him his wife and two children on July 16, 1854. Merrill's farm became known as Merrill's Prairie along with those of other early pioneers including Drury, Fenton, Cassady and others. Fifty years later when the railroad began to be built through central Wisconsin it brought more people and businesses into the area which included existing villages such as Greenfield (now West Allis), Appleton, Fox Point (now Racine) and many others that developed because of shipbuilding or agriculture ventures begun by early settlers or by railroads themselves In 1907 when Pewaukee incorporated as a municipality it had 636 residents; by 1957 its population had grown to 10,852 making it one of the fastest growing municipalities in Wisconsin during that time period The economic development around Pewaukee has come from various industries over time including shipbuilding which stopped production after World War II but has seen resurgence since then due to new technology developments; truck manufacturing which ceased production after 1970 but has seen resurgence due to American Trucking Associations' efforts to buy out various companies; agricultural endeavors such as dairy farming beginning about 1870 which have continued until present day; modern transportation amenities like Interstate 94 which opened up parts of central Wisconsin during the late 1990s while also creating jobs for people hereabouts; all these have helped contribute to today's strong economy within this tiny community
