Klein’s invention revolutionized how ammunition is used today and has been credited with helping to improve troop morale during World War I and World War II. Klein also founded the world’s first modern manufacturing plant for brass cartridge production in Pewaukee in 1916-17. Pewaukee is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 29,811 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Potawatomi word pewa-wauh (meaning "place where the water runs"). The Town of Pewaukee was organized in 1836 and named for George W. Pew (1789-1856), an early settler in Milwaukee County. In 1854, John Prentice formed a company to build a canal through what is now Pewaukee between Menomonee and Racine counties. By 1865, when construction began on the canal, all of southern Milwaukee County had been annexed by Chicago and most of northern Milwaukee County had been annexed by Racine County. At that time, only part of Pewaukee remained within Milwaukee County. On February 10, 1896, the entire town became a city under revised charter provisions passed by referendum during a special session of the Wisconsin State Legislature following an amendment to their state Constitution granting Home Rule to cities with populations over 25%. The city limits were expanded to include much of southeastern Racine County on December 3, 1913. The annexation created new neighborhoods such as Hazelwood and White Dale which continue to be developed today

Pewaukee is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River in the Ozaukee County seat of West Allis. The population was 10,558 at the 2010 census. Pewaukee is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1854 and incorporated as a village in 1871. It was first named Hegewisch after General von Hegewich, who commanded German forces during the Mexican-American War and later served as United States Minister to Mexico City. The name originated from an old English place called Peveley which means "between two rivers." In 1919, Pewaukee became one of fourteen towns annexed by Milwaukee; it remained an independent municipality until September 1, 2006 when it merged with neighboring Waukesha into the new Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The Fox River forms most of Pewaukee's border and namesake river has been mentioned by Native Americans since prehistory. A post office called Hegewisch was established in 1854, and renamed Pewaukee in 1865 because American missionaries recommended that name to local settlers when they visited Germany for evangelical work among Germans living there at that time. The first settler here was John Laughlin who arrived May 21st, 1853 on stagecoach from Green Bay via Springfield and built his home on land donated by Isaac Goodyear (brother-in-law of William McKinley). In 1870 he married Catharine Wetzel who also came from Germany but had no children so she moved back to her native country with her husband where she died soon after giving birth to their only child - John Laughlin II (the current owner). Another early settler were George Kappenheimer and his family who arrived February 26th, 1860 from Jefferson County WI along with his wife Anna Kappenheimer Vogt along with their three youngest children: Henry Gustavus Wilhelm Kappenheimer (1863-1936), Clara Alice Kappenheimer Vogt (1865-1945)and Rudolph Harry Kappenheimer (1867-1948). They started a sawmill here on what is now owned by Whitefish Industries Incorporated which still stands today just east of downtown west side alley between Neely’s Drugstore & Safeway across Elm Street
Pewaukee was first settled in 1846 by the Potawatomi people. The town was named for George Washington Pewaukee, a brother of General David Wilkinson. The first school in Pewaukee opened in 1851. In 1865, the town was renamed to Waukesha and then to Milwaukee.
