When Oshkosh Racine was first settled in 1847, the area that now includes Oshkosh consisted of a small swamp and a few scattered farmsteads. The first settlers were prospectors looking for coal and other minerals in what is now Green Bay. By 1850, there were seventy-two residents living in Oshkosh, most of whom were farmers or day laborers. The early years of Oshkosh’s growth were difficult. It was only until 1871 when the town received its charter from the Wisconsin General Assembly. The original purpose of Oshkosh was to provide lumber for local mills and to serve as a staging ground for trail drives across the region. However, with the arrival of railroads in the mid-19th century, Oshkosh quickly became one of the leading industrial towns in Wisconsin. OshkOSH'S GUN TARGET HISTORY: The earliest guns used by settlers in this area were musketballs fired from longbows or Composite bows which could only reach about 20 yards (15 meters). By 1800, rifles had become available and began to be used for hunting small game such as deer and rabbit. In 1851, Captain James Wickersham donated two shotguns to be used by members of his company during their rifle practice at Park Lake on Appleton Creek. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of gun target shooting here at Oshkosh! In 1892, Reverend John Sneath donated ten pistols to help promote Rifle Practice Week at Park Lake State School. This event is generally considered to be when handgun target shooting started here! In 1907, another shotgun donation was made – this time an American Model “5” Winchester rifle – which would go on to becoming one of the most popular targets around here! In 1912, we donated our first “tractor pistol” (actually a single shot 30 caliber revolver) which helped promote hand-to-hand combat training exercises that took place at various locations throughout town! We also continued donations starting in 1916 until our current donation policy began back in 1978! Today we continue giving handguns as well as rifles & shotguns each year during Rifle Practice Week!!!
