The Oshkosh Gun Swivels Company was founded in 1897 by two brothers, George and John Oshkosh. The company specialized in the manufacture of gun swivels and other rifle accessories. The Oshkosh Gun Swivels Company was a major supplier to the Wisconsin Military Militia during World War I. In 1923, the company merged with anotherSwiss manufacturer, Schneider & Co., to form Schneider, Inc. In 1955, the company reverted to its original name - Oshkosh Gun Swivels Company.

Matson's family name means "place where there are many fish." In 1861, John Ladd moved to Oshkosh from Green Bay and started a lumber business that became one of the largest in Wisconsin. In 1865, Jens Jensen bought 50 acres (20 hectares) of land north of town and began to build a sawmill and gristmill. This mill became one of the most important mills in Northwestern Wisconsin because it produced flour for local grocery stores as well as war supplies for the American Civil War. In 1872, Wm Hodge purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) of land east of town from Ladd and began to farm it. Hodge's Farmland Today provides over 20% of Oshkosh's total agricultural production In 1880, Gustavus Adolphus Rasmussen settled in Oshkosh after traveling through North America on his way to become a missionary for Danish Lutheran missionaries working among Native Americans. Rasmussen had heard about conditions on farms near Milwaukee so he decided to move to what he thought would be an easier life than living among Indians. He met his wife here while she worked at her sisters' bakery shop across the street from City Hall; they married here on December 12, 1880. Their daughter Alma later married Julius Krueger who also owned City Hall before moving it into his home when it burned down in 1922 Rasmussen Avenue is named after him
Oshkosh, Wis. was founded in 1854 by John Fetterman and others during the Wisconsin Territory's rush for independence from Great Britain. The town grew rapidly, becoming a center of commerce and industry. Oshkosh reached its peak as an agricultural center in the late 19th century, but has since declined in population and economic importance.
