Oshkosh is a village in the town of Winthrop, Oshkosh County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Waukesha metropolitan area. Oshkosh has a rich agricultural history dating back to 1847 when it was settled by farmers from Canada and the United Kingdom. The Village name OskOSH comes from English "out hatching your eggs" because early settlers found eggs coming out of the ground. Oshkosh's economy revolves around manufacturing and agriculture; these are its primary industries accounting for over 60% of GDP in 2005. The first settler in what is now Oshkosh came overland fromCanada on November 15, 1847 with his family and four horses. They named their new home after George Washington Carver who had made a Donation of land to the village in 1846 while he was president of Tuskegee University near Alabama. Mr. Carver had also donated some land to Oshkosh which became known as "Carver Park." The first store opened in 1850 at Fourth and State Streets within present day downtown Oshkosh. A post office called Green Bay opened on October 12, 1851 under auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church but continued operation until it merged into WisconSawyer County on July 1st 1907 then again into Racine County on December 5th 1912 under terms set by Govts Act No 97-972 (the original shopping center). In 1957, Oshkosh Land & Commerce Company purchased Wabash Railroad mainline line from Conrail which formed basis for diversifying local commercial activities including grain shipping container traffic through port facilities located at Portage Lake along Wabash River corridor between Milwaukee and Racine Counties; this resulted in an increase in jobs for locals as well as exports to other parts of Wisconsin In 1965 Wisconson Telephone Company moved its Headquarters from Appleton to Oshkwish due to increased competition from telecommunication companies across Midwest region; this led to construction of world’s first toll free telephone service through use of microwave technology allowing for voice and data communication without having extra wires running throughout home or office Today many businesses still call themselves “Oshkwish” such as: American Weighing House (formerly Kearney weighing house), Drive-in restaurant chain Red Knoppers Inc., home builders Bobcats Residential Homes (now Century 21), Meijer Grocery stores/Supermarkets anchor Super 8 Motel & Spa etc.; all claiming jurisdiction so long ago that city limits have been erased completely! Oshkosh, Wisconsin is a town in Scott County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,817 at the 2010 census. Oshkosh is the home of the Oshkosh Air National Guard Base and five other military installations. The Oshkosh area was first settled by European Americans in 1835. The town was incorporated as a village in 1854. Oshkosh became a city in 1958.
The town of Oshkosh was chartered in 1847 and named for Samuel Oshkosh, an American pioneer. The town's first building was a log cabin erected by Wm. H. Griggs. Oshkosh grew quickly as a rural community, with several stores and a post office opening up in the early years. By 1861, Oshkosh had grown to include a population of around 100 people and had started developing its own economy based on agriculture and manufacturing. In the late 1800s, Oshkosh emerged as one of the most important mining towns in Wisconsin due to its rich iron ore resources. The town's economy cratered during the Depression era, however, and it lost much of its population during this time period. After World War II, Oshkosh experienced rapid growth as new industries such as plastics and textiles developed in nearby Racine County. Today, OshkOSH is one of Wisconsin's largest cities with over 200,000 residents spread across more than 15 neighborhoods across 5 wards
