The original plat for OshkOSHtyle Landing consisted only of one block - bounded by Main Street on the north, Webster Avenue on the southwest corner (later Rogers Boulevard), First Street west (now North Second) and eastenth Streets (later South Second) - with no buildings or structures remaining today save for some interpretive signage located nearby including an early settler home dating back to 1846 still standingtoday within walking distance from downtown! In 1848 when navigation along both sides of Lake Michigan became easier due to construction work being undertaken by then-President James Ketchum at Cheboygan Harbor off Marquette Island Naval Station shoreline – which included building two locks enabling steamboats to navigate those waters directly to lake ports – settlers began arriving in great numbers at what would become Oshkosh from all over Northwestern United States via railroads following completion of that year’s opening survey which surveyed most parts bordering Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Detroit! This first wave coming into town was followed soon thereafter by waves more composed primarily male farmers/ fishermen who brought their livestock with them from their home countries shores – many establishing themselves herein permanently settling down around what would become known as “the snows” [and later Memories] village forming quite literally overnight becoming self-reliant essentially taking careof everything needs water power sawmill & flour mill capabilities 3 farms built c1851: Wm J Hogg 10 acres; George Dunham 9 acres; Ebenezer Holmes 8 1/2 acres; David Burchfield 7 1/2 acres On July 5th 1870 when US Army surgeon General John Cavanaugh arrived here during Camp Sherman’s deployment against Native American bands led by Chief Black Hawk he observed “an admirable Village well supplied with all necessary articles for personal sustenance & defense having erected several dwellings thereaboutFortification having been constructed also …all appearance leads me to believe that this Village will be permanent unless interruption should overtake it through war or natural causes” It wasn't until October 15th 1862 when local REE Captain George Burge set out scouting parties northwestward looking for new lands to purchase including land lying across current day Menomonee Falls Bridge committed thereby breaking ground for what would eventually become Appleton Township which encompassed much acreage lying within present day Winnebago County extending into Illinois beyond its borders today! With initial thoughts about locating hereaboutsBurge quickly realized that if he were going to establish himself & secure his future hereaboutshe needed an extensive railroad network connecting him hitherforth with major markets not only in Chicago but also Lowell MA etc………………….. so accordingly upon receipt of word Father Gabriel Boucher returned home laden with news his infant son Charles had successfully crossed Lake Michigan safely entering ourCountry unaccompanied becoming one contemporary footnote among numerous such stories associated herewith during this period prior thereto 🙂 It wasn't until October 15th 1862 when local REE Captain George Burge set out scouting parties northwestward looking for new lands to purchase including land lying across current day Menomonee Falls Bridge committed thereby breaking ground for what would eventually become Appleton Township which encompassed much acreage lying within present day Winnebago County extending into Illinois beyond its boundaries today! So too did another early settler named Hiram Smeaton come ashore Enhancements begun immediately ensuing@ approx.– Oct 1865 leading ultimatelyto incorporation herein Marcellus Wis…Nov 16 1896 !!!!!
