Oshkosh is the largest city in Green Bay County and the fifth-largest municipality in Wisconsin. It is part of the Chicago–Milwaukee–St. Paul metropolitan area. Oshkosh is located on Lake Michigan and its downtown offers a mix of Victorian architecture and modern buildings. The first Europeans to visit Oshkosh were French traders in 1674 who came along the Fox River as part of their long journey from Montreal to find new markets for their goods. Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1701 and founded an Indian mission at what is now Oshkosh before moving eastward into present-day Dane County in 1715. In 1853, Oshkosh was incorporated as a town under the name of Appleton with a population of 1,000 people. A panic caused by unfounded rumors that gold was hidden near Appleton led to another round of incorporation changes resulting in OshkOSH having a total population of 10,814 when it welcomed its current residents on January 1, 1959! In 1907, Oshkosh became one of only four townships within Green Bay County to be combined with Racine to form the new Racine–Oshkwakon township (it had been split between Racine and Appleton). On November 6, 1911 voters ratified a proposition providing for local self-government within township boundaries through election held on December 5th even though no annexation petition had yet been filed! The following year saw more consolidation; on January 1st 1912 racinians joined us locals when we merged with updated Osseo Township! As bad news kept coming about wars raging overseas – World War I started just two weeks after our merger – many people decided it might be better if we all just stopped living here permanently so we could go back home to France! Although this idea got some support from some key citizens including Mayor John Geddes (he’d later serve as Governor), most people chose instead to stay put until things calmed down…and then come back when things improved?!!?! Anyway…back to business as usual! On October 15th 1914 vote results showed that over 60%of tax payers approved forming an organization called “the Committee for Local Improvement” which would help promote growth within our small community while also holding meetings monthly throughout 1915 !!! Yes folks – not only did we get our own government but we also started meeting regularly so you could keep up with what was happening right outside your door!!!
