Onalaska, Wisconsin is a town in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. The first European to visit Onalaska was Pierre LaFontaine in 1795. He named it "Ocala", after his home of Ocala, Florida. Onalaska was platted in 1836 by John Underwood and Amos Kendall as a town on the east side of the Koshkon Reservoir. The name Onalaska doubtless originated with that of one of its founders - John Underwood's father-in-law, Isaac Vallandigham (1754-1824). Underwood had come to this country from Vermont in 1824 as a fur trader and surveyor under General Anthony Wayne and played an important role in developing what became Sheboygan County. In 1838 he organized the village of Onalaska near present day Waukesha; but it did not become a permanent settlement until 1840 when he donated land for the village site on which it stands today. In December 1861, during American Civil War I (the war to end slavery), Onalaska residents helped liberate Union soldiers from two Confederate prisons near their town. They were known as "The Defenceless". In 1865 Onalaska joined the more populous city of Milwaukee as one municipality within Milwaukee Township; and within same year became an incorporated town with boundaries unchanged since 1861 save for changing eastern borderm

Onalaska was first settled in 1836 by the Onalaska Sioux. The town was named after a small island in the Wisconsin River. The town grew quickly and soon had a post office, school, and religious services. In 1904, Onalaska became the capital of the newly created Racine County.
