In 1853, an act of Congress provided for a town site on Lake Michigan's east shoreline be donated by Governor Andrew Johnson to provide land for a new town center on Milwaukee's west side; Onalaska became that town on July 1, 1854. The original plat includes both the current downtown area and almost all of what is now the eastern edge of Milwaukee County. In 1902, when Milwaukee annexed Racine and many other villages into its city limits, Onalaska lost much of its residential character as well as its commercial vitality; however, some efforts have been made to revive it including plans to create a park nearOWNERSHIP DISTRICT #2 PARKWAY & WALKING STREET ONALAKSA located adjacent to Town Hall plaza with interpretive signage about early settlers "The history of this small community may be traced back more than one hundred years." This sentiment can be found throughout most aspects about Onalaska: from its location on Lake Michigan's east shoreline - just across from modern day Milwaukee - giving it easy access to both economic opportunity and social activity (the community saw many waves of immigrants over time), all the way up through its various incarnations as an incorporated municipality (including several name changes) before finally finding itself today as an unincorporated place with full civic rights within Kenosha County proper.

Onalaska's history can be traced back to 1835 when it was called "Beaver Dam". The first European to visit Onalaska was Captain James Cook in 1775, who named it "New Anchorage" after his discovery of what he thought were two islands off the coast of Alaska. In 1835, Beaver Dam became a post office and saw its first growth as a result of the development ofrailroads connecting Chicago with Milwaukee and other cities. Settlement continued until 1851 due to uncertainty over land titles ensuing from Indian wars that had swept across North America during that time period. In 1898, Onalaska school District #1 merged with School District #2 to form Onalaska-Beloit School District #2. In 1923, Onalaka-Beloit School District #2 merged into School District #3 which then merged into School District #4 in 1954; finally, on July 1st, 1978 all four schools districts unified into one educational entity known as “Onalaska-Milwaukie-Elyria” Schools Corporation (OEMEC).Today OEMEC has 8 schools located within its boundaries: 5 elementary schools (on Main Street), 2 middle/high schools (Lakeview Academy and Our Lady Of The Lake Catholic High School), 1 comprehensive high school (John F Kennedy Jr./Washington Park HS), 2 alternative education programs (Wolverine Valley Academy and Green Bay Alternative Learning Center) and 1 adult education program (Onala Adult Education Center).
Onalaska, Wisconsin was founded in 1854 by a group of men from the nearby town of La Crosse. The town was named for Onalaska Creek, which ran through it. The town was incorporated in 1892. Onalaska is located in Iron County and has a population of around 2,500.
