As technology improved, however, mills started producing more than just lumber; they also produced masonry products such as bricks and mortar. Onalaska is a small town located on the western edge of Kenosha County, Wisconsin. It shares borders with Winnebago County to the east and north, and Ozaukee County to the west. The town is bordered by Lake Michigan to the south and east, as well as a rural area to the northwest which includes parts of Green Bay and Milwaukee. The first post office in Onalaska was established in 1851. The present day town was incorporated in 1912. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,827 people residing in the town: 1,046 households; 1,151 families; and 714 housing units (or 86%). Of these households, 28% had children underthe age of 18 living with them,[1] 36% were married couples living together,[2] 24% had a female householder with no husband present,[3] 26% had a male householder with no wife present,[4] and 42% were non-families.[5] OutOfAll Housing Units 21%, or 3 outof every 10 units were occupied by renters.,[6][7][8][9][10]. Each unit included one bedroom along with two bathrooms plus an kitchenette or mini-fridge/freezer combo.,[11][12][13], making it difficult for homeownership rates within this community because they are spread evenly throughout different types of dwellings including apartments (18%), co-ops (14%), single family homes (9%), multifamily dwellings (6%) and mobile home parks (2%). In addition robberies have been reported sporadically throughout aspects such as grocery stores (.09 per 100 sqft) but not at bars/restaurants (%0-.15), gas stations (.02/.07), convenience stores (.01/.06) or other commercial areas (.005).[14],[15],[16]}

Onalaska was originally settled in 1853 by the guides, traders and hunters of the Wisconsin Fur Company. The town site was chosen because it offered good grazing land for animals and a sheltered harbor to dock their goods. In 1856, Onalaska became the location of the first county seat in what is now Milwaukee County. The town’s economy began to develop after railroads were built through central Wisconsin in the late 19th century. The townsite was also an important stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad (CML&P). By 1890, Onalaska had 1,500 residents and had become a small agricultural center with a few stores and a school. In 1912, Onalaska voters adopted a new city charter that made it an independent municipality within Milwaukee County. By 1925, however, Onalaska's economy had begun to decline as milk production dwindled due to improved transportation methods and other changes in the dairy industry. In 1932, Milwaukee County annexed Onalaska into its jurisdiction; this ended its status as an independent municipality. The last residents of Onalaska left in 1954 when the township was merged intoMilwaukee Township; today, much of what once constituted Onalaska is located within Park Ridge subdivision in neighboring Brookfield Township. The town site still remains vacant although plans are underway to restore some portions of it as part of parkland development near downtown Milwaukee
