Onalaska, Wisconsin is a town in the heart of the Great Lakes region. It is bordered by the state of Michigan to the north, and Iowa and Illinois to the east. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. The town's history dates back to 1854 when it was founded as a small community on what is now U.S. Route 12. In that year, Onalaska became one of three towns in Calumet County that were platted and named for British investors: Kingston upon Hull (1854), Windsor (1855) and Okemos (1856). In 1857, Onalaska changed its name to Onalaska after John Prentice Onalaska, an early settler from Ontario who had bought land in what is now central Wisconsin. Since then, Onalaska has been a vibrant center for retail trade and cultural activities in the Great Lakes region. Its rich historyinspired several recent local businesses such as Apple Inc.'s headquarters building on State Street which opened in 2006 and serves as their first international headquarters outside of California; KFC Worldwide Headquarters which opened in 2007; JP Morgan Chase & Co.'s new downtown tower; First Midwest Bank Tower which completed construction in 2009; and Hormel Foods Corporation's new facility adjacent to First Midwest Bank Tower whichopened in 2011- all within walking distance of each other or less than one mile away from downtown! In addition to its illustrious retail past, Onalaska has also played host to many notable events over the years including two World War II airfields being built here: Camp Kilmer Air Force Base (1946-48) and Fort George Wright Army Ammunition Plant (1949-51). Onalaska, Wisconsin is a village in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 963 at the 2010 census. Onalaska is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Racine metropolitan area. It is served by the Onalaska School District. The first Europeans to visit what is now Onalaska were French traders and fur trappers in 1694. In 1836, the first post office was established in what is now Onalaska; it operated for two years before being discontinued due to lack of mail usage. In 1880, a sawmill and gristmill were built in what is now on Main Street; they continued operation until 1960. The village's name comes from an event that took place in 1836 when three men from Racine visited what is now Onalaska and found it abandoned because its inhabitants had fled during a Native American uprising against European settlers that year. They named the village after Pierre-Jacques Chateaubriand (1768-1848), who had been generalresident of Quebec City and then president of the French Republic from 1793 to 1800. The Village of Onalaska was organized as a town on December 14, 1920; it became an incorporated village on January 1, 1954. The Village had a population of 712 people at the 2000 census; however, this number decreased to 692 at the 2010 census due to loss of residents to other municipalities within Douglas County or elsewhere within Wisconsin over that period

Onalaska is a town in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Onalaska has been a part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area since its incorporation in 1885. The town is named after Onalaska Lake and the surrounding country. The first post office opened in 1852, and the first settler to arrive was Joshua Morse. He built a cabin on what is now known as Morse Road. In 1855, John Fitch set up a sawmill just east of present-day Onalaska. By 1865, there were 11 families living in Onalaska and six businesses doing business there: three stores, one millinery shop, and one blacksmith shop. In 1887, David Ladd established the first store in Onalaska with $1 worth of goods bought from John Greenough of Oshkosh. The town had two churches by 1888: First Congregational (founded 1886) and then Methodist (founded 1889). A post office called Mishawaka was established at Mishawaka Rapids on March 3rd of that year; it remained open until it was discontinued in 1906 due to lack of mail traffic. The railroad reached Onalaska via Sheboygan River valley on October 17th, 1862; within weeks of reaching the community, railroads had started branding new townsites “Onalaska” all over Wisconsin Territory following their successes along the Great Western Railroad corridor from Minnesota to Missouri City Iowa Territory before branching off into Illinois Territory for Chicago – this particular line being laid down by James Kossuth as part of his Prairie Extension Program which linked Illinois with Northwestern Railway mainline from Minneapolis through WaterlooIowa Territory to Kansas City Missouri Territory via Council Bluffs Iowa Territory before terminating at TopekaKansas City about south of here near present day Sheboygan Falls Boulevard on May 8th 1865 making this one stop – enough time for residents to start erecting buildings which would continue becoming more numerous as settlers arrived including Nicholas Hennepin who founded Red Wing north adjacent today’s RacineWisconsin Territorial capital city boasting an earlier Fort Snelling Indian Treaty negotiated between Chief Black Hawk and Major Anthony De La Harpe resulting in some 25 permanent resident villages/townships scattered throughout western Wisconsin under federal jurisdiction several miles northwest where(today’s)Sheboygan Falls Boulevard meets Interstate 94 just outside PlattevilleWisconsinborderland
Onalaska was organized in 1854 as a town and post office. The first settler, Isaac Hinton, arrived in 1855. The town started to grow rapidly due to the lumber industry and agriculture. In 1870, Onalaska became a city. Onalaska became an improved fishing village after becoming an appendage of Milwaukee in 1895.
