Onalaska is a small town in central Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It takes its name from the Onalaska River. The first settlers in what is now Onalaska were French Canadians who came to the area in 1834. They built a post office and store on the banks of the river. The town began to grow when Germans moved into the area in the early 1800s. In 1883, Onalaska became part of Milwaukee County and grew even more when it was annexed by that city in 1895. After World War II, Onalaska experienced rapid growth as various businesses moved into town including grocery stores, automotive dealerships and mechanics shops. Onalaska is a small town in the town of Bayfield, Wisconsin. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Onalaska is located on the Fox River. The community was founded in 1867 by George and Sarah Goodrich. The Goodrichs were Idaho pioneers who came to Bayfield in 1857 with their family. They built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Fox River. In 1869, they married Anna Masten, who was from nearby Appomattox City. Themastens had two children: George masten and Sarah goodrich masten. In 1870, the Mastens voted to rename their settlement Onalaska after John Onslow, an American Revolutionary War general and fur trader from Nova Scotia. John Onslow had been captain of HMS "Osprey" during the Battle of Bunker Hill and later became one of Bayfield's first settlers. The Mastens continued to live in Onalaska until their death in 1925. Their son George masten Jr., also an early settler, died in 1954 at age 77 years old. His wife Sarah Goodrich masten lived to 91 years old before she passed away in 1978 aged 101 years old). Her granddaughter Edith Goodrich Gangemi-Krusick currently lives there full time and is caretaker for both her grandparents' gravesites (the only living descendants are her great-grandparents). Onalaka has a large number of heritage buildings and objects that date back to its earliest days as a small community including: The Log Cabin erected by George & Sarah Goodrich in 1867 which still stands today; A school building built by locals in 1875; A barn built by local farmers around 1880; A post office established here circa 1886 which still functions today; A Methodist church completed c1890 which now houses art galleries; An Odd Fellows hall completed c1910 which serves as the town center Cultural Center; Two churches completed between 1915-1920 - Both Methodists - One called First Baptist Church (now known as Trinity United Methodist) while the other was called Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church after it's conversion from an Baptists church following World War I; An African American owned grocery store opened here c1960 named Redeemer's Grocery Company after Reverend Claudius Redemptorious Johnson Sr.; And finally numerous homes constructed over time such as: The original Lombard House erected by George &SarahGoodrichestherein1867whichstillstands TODAY!
