Onalaska, Wisconsin is a town in Onalaska County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Onalaska County. The name "Onalaska" is derived from the Ojibwe word "hiawatha." The first settlers in what is now Onalaska County were German immigrants who arrived in 1854. They built log cabins and raised crops until 1876 when they moved to a more permanent location on the banks of the Fox River. In 1887, they founded the town of Onalaska on land that was donated by Alexander Macdonald. The first post office was established in 1888 and continued operation until 1963. In 1907, the state legislature passed a bill that created Onalaska County and provided for its creation within it as well as for its courthouse and jail. The town of Onalaka became its county seat while still maintaining its own government with a Mayor/Council form of government which it has held ever since. On July 1, 2009, Apple Inc.'s new headquarters were announced to be located in Onalaska - providing much-needed job growth and additional revenue to help support local government coffers during difficult economic times. In 1839, John Prentice established a trading post at Onalaska which became known as Prentice's Post. In 1840, Augustus Kapp settled at Onalaska and built Kapp's Store which still stands there today. In 1865, Ole Hanson arrived at Atchison Landing with his family from Norway and set up a farm near present day Kirkland Lake where he continued to farm until1872 when he sold his land to Wm Halsey Mackall who laid out Atchison Landing into blocks called streets/cities etc., much as we do today! After Mackall died in 1888 his heirs divided his land among themselves but all efforts have not been successful in achieving closure of this long closed history!
