In recent years, Onalaska has experienced economic decline due to its remote location and lack of job opportunities. Nevertheless, its downtown retains some notable historical landmarks, including the Stonington Hotel which served as a hotel for president George Washington Carver before he moved to Montgomery County in 1865; Mount Olivet Cemetery; and Onalaka Elementary School which serves grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

Onalaska is a town in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Onalaska is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first post office at Onalaska was established on May 5, 1857, and served as the eastern terminus of the Milwaukee-Eau Claire Railroad. The town was named after John Onalaska (1817–1871), an American fur trader and politician who served as mayor of Eau Claire from 1858 to 1861. On July 8, 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad reached Onalaska and began construction of its line through Marathon County; this made Onalaska one of the earliest towns in Marathon County to adopt a Central Time Zone. The railroad also built a depot in town. In 1902, Commerce College opened its doors for business in what would become known as "the college town." In 1908 it becameWisconsin's second university when Purdue University purchased land adjacent to its campus for $1 million; later that year Purdue merged with Western Reserve University to form Northwestern University. In 1925, WISC-TV (then ABC) began operations here; it remained headquartered here until 1990 when WGN America took over operations from ABC. In 1955, Onalaska voters passed a school referendum authorizing construction of a new high school building and other educational improvements thereon; this project came to fruition in 1957 when First Third High School opened its doors for students grades 9 through 12 under the name "Onalaskan High". Today's "First Third" offers comprehensive education for students ranging from kindergarten through twelfth grade; furthermore it has been accredited by AdvancED which ranks among the top certification programs offered by professional schools worldwide
