In 1847, reports started coming in about Indian attacks on settlers in this area. So the government decided to set upposts around Onalaska to try and protect people from these attackers. The posts were called fortresses and each post had eight cannons that could fire shots as far as 100 yards away! These cannons helped keep the settlers safe from Indian attack while also allowing them to trade goods with the Indians

In 1871, two men prospected for coal near Onalaska and found some deposits that became known as the White Coal Field. Mining began soon after and continued until 1905 when the last mine closed down. In 1907, a hotel called the Hotel Atchison opened up on Main Street which served as the town's first general store and business center until 1924 when it burned down. The agricultural industry played an important role in Onalaska’s history starting with early settlement by farmers who raised corn, beans, haystack cheese and other crops around their homes or outbuildings before moving on to larger operations over time. Dairy farming continues to be an important part of local economy today with cheese production accounting for about 60% of all sales statewide In 1926 Onalaska had only one grocery store but by 1940 there were six stores with a total population of 3,814 people including 1 liquor store . One major change during this time period was subdivision which led to increased growth within the community due to easy access to outside resources .
