Onalaska is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Racine River. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and has a population of 14 million people. The town's name comes from Onalaska Lake, which empties into Racine Bay. The first permanent settler in what would become Onalaska was James Armstrong in 1830. Other early settlers were John Ritchie and David Hargrave. In 1836, Onalaska incorporated as a village under the name "Racine." When Racine was re-established as an incorporated city in 1845, Onal Alaska became its vice president and treasurer with oversight over all civic affairs within the newly chartered city limits. On July 1, 1851, Onalaska became one of twelve towns in Milwaukee County when that county was organized; it ceased being an independent municipality on January 1, 1955. In 1912–13, Jens Schulz ran for mayor as a Democrat against Republican incumbent Charles Auerbach and won by 443 votes to 379 (57%). He served two terms before dying at age 73 in office on October 21, 1913; his term ended on November 3 that year after he had been impeached by recall referendum vote following revelations about graft during his mayoral campaign financing operation known as "the golden window". His son Jens Jr., who succeeded him as mayoralty candidate but lost by just 322 votes to 472 (60%) – more than three times out of five million cast – helped give Milwaukee its first African American municipal election victory since Reconstruction era racism ended fourteen years earlier when he took office; this gave Milwaukee its first black politician elected statewide since World War II began Bringhurst then became one of three mayors serving consecutively until 1978 when Harold Washington lost his seat to Richard Moseley Sr., becoming Mayor of Chicago after vacating his mayoral run for national service during the Reagan administration).
