After John G.'s death in 1944, his son, Fred Healey took over management of the store. Fred Healey had a long career at the store, retiring in 1984. In 1996, Fred's daughter Lori took over as manager of the store after her father's death. Since then, Ammo has continued to be a staple in Onalaska history with its wide range of products and knowledgeable staff. In 1840, Onalaska became part of the new United States of America and began to grow even more quickly. By 1850, it had reached its current size with a population of 350 people. During this time, Onalaka saw some significant changes happen within its own community. For one, it began to becomeitionally German-owned businesses began to emerge as well as many German-speaking families moved into the town during this time period. Additionally, on several occasions regional tournaments were held in which students from various schools would compete against each other for prizes or bragging rights. These competitions helped keep Onalaska alive and active during these difficult times。 Despite all these successes though, there were also some dark days for Onalaska during this time period….. In 1855, two brothers named George and Wilhelm Gerhardt died while fighting for US independence from Great Britain…….. In 1861 local resident Augustus Herrmann was accused of arson following an argument with his wife………. And finally in 1865 local resident Johann Kappelbach was convicted of treason after he aided Abraham Lincoln’s reelection campaign
Onalaska was founded in 1858 by Isaac Asimov, a Russian immigrant. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Wisconsin Central Railroad in 1870, and by 1900 Onalaska had a population of 2,500. In 1907, Onalaska became the county seat of Polk County.
