Oconomowoc is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, with a population of over 50,000 as of 2010. The city is the largest in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and was founded on August 30, 1873, by United States soldiers who had been stationed there during the American Civil War. Oconomowoc is located on the east bank of the Menomonee River, just north of Milwaukee proper and it lies at an elevation of 597 feet (187 m). The name "Oconomowoc" means "place where men used to gather wood." In 1865, Mayor John Fitch ordered surveyors to determine if there was any land available for settlement in what is now Oconomowoc County. On November 12, 1867, General John Custer named three roads – State Highway 23 or "the Fitch Road", State Highway 26 or "The Old Highway", and State Highway 10 or "The New Highway" – after General John Custer's unit that fought in the American Civil War. In 1870 and 1871, local farmers started clearing land for farming purposes near present-day Oconomowoc and adjacent counties; these farms became known collectively as “The Prairie”. A post office called Oconomowoc was established in 1875; it closed unopened in 1907 because postal service was discontinued within Wisconsin due to budget cuts by then Governor David Cameron Forbes. On August 30th 1873 US soldiers from Fort Snelling arrived at what is now Waukesha County to help garrison Fort Frederick during the American Civil War. Many veterans settled here including Captain George Muhlenberg who donated land for a town site on which Oconomowoc would be founded; Muhlenberg's donation included two logs dammed up with earth at what is now Main Street & West Side Road (now North Avenue). The first settler arrived early autumn 1890 when Amasaiah Holmes moved from Hartford WI along with his family into section 8 Lots 12 & 13 opposite Gossamer Millrace (now South Main Street) which he had acquired from Nicholas Knappenburg prior to purchase of Knappenburg Township from him December 24th 1889 . At this time Holmes also purchased lot 6 south side road between Gossamer Millrace & White Water Creek from Captains John Sibley Sept 15th 1890 . This area later became known as Holmes Corners .

Oconomowoc is a town in McHenry County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,503 at the 2010 census. Oconomowoc is the smallest of the five towns in McHenry County and it had a population of 2,821 as of 2017. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Oconomowoc was John Prentice on April 14, 1836. He and his wife Esther built their first home on what would become State Road 6 east of town. On May 15th, 1836 Prentice married Sarah Hildreth from Menomonee Falls.[1] They lived there for six years before moving to a farm west of town on September 16th where they remained until 1840 when they again moved to their present location. In 1845 they bought another farm southwest of town which they occupied until 1850 when they sold it and moved back to their original location which became State Road 6 (later Main Street). In 1870 they bought land northeast of town and developed it into an agricultural center that continues today with over ninety businesses.[2] When Milwaukee consolidated with Chicago in 1898, Oconomowoc was one of four villages within its boundaries that did not join the city proper;[3] instead it continued to operate as an independent community under the name "Oconomowoc".[4][5][6] In 1907 it merged with neighboring Village Kieltyka to form Kieltyka-Oconomowoc Combined Statistical Area (CSA).[7] From 1916 through 1924, during World War I,[8][9][10] Oconomowoca operated as a military base providing goods and services to troops stationed there;[11][12] after the war ended those activities stopped and the village reverted back to its pre-war status quo until 1966 when it experienced significant growth due in part to plans by then Mayor Gary Locke for larger development within its bounds;[13][14][15][16] this led finally to its incorporation into Milwaukee as an official municipality on December 1st,[17][18] one day after merging with Villages Kieltyka-Oconomowoc Combined Statistical Area (CSA).[19]=
