Oconomowoc is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,643 at the 2010 census. Oconomowoc is the second most populous municipality in La Crosse County after La Crosse. The town of Oconomowoc was organized on February 13, 1854 by order of the Wisconsin State Legislature. The original plat for the village of Oconomowoc was filed on November 17, 1850 with deed number 711 from Abraham S Mathis to Isaac Luehmann and others. On October 6, 1858, a new plat for the town of Oconomowoc was filed with deed number 527 from John W Kapp to Elisha S Meyers and others. The first post office opened in Oconomowoco on October 10, 1858. The current Post Office building located at 501 N Main Street was built in 1928 and is one of only two buildings in central La Crosse County that were built completely out of concrete during the early part of this century. The first settler in what would become Oconomowoc Township was Captain John S218 Decatur who arrived January 14th 1840 via ship called "Northeast", captained by Capt David Chilton Jr.. He had been sent downriver by his father-in-law Jabez Beall to surveyed land grants near present day Appleton and Fond du LacMinnesota Territory before returning upriver again as captain on July 16th 1840 along with his family including six children ages 8 thru 11 years old named Anna J., James P., Susan M., Jonathan C., Sarah A.. They camped around mile post #8 on what is now North Main Street where they built a log cabin which still stands today across from Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Building (now First National Bank). It seems their initial stopover became their permanent home as within days they had anotherfamily member arrive “Anna Petronella”widowed Capt David Chilton jr who brought her 3 small children age 2 thru 5 years old named? Jacob Dankenbring (Dank) & ? Matilda Brouwerbeck (Brouwer) both born December 12th 1841 just east of Green Bay overland journeying westward as far as Council Bluffs Iowavia wagon road then northwesterly through Dodge City Nebraska Territory over night crossing Missouri River into Illinois Territory near modern day Warsaw IL.. After reaching Council Bluffs they turned northwest backtracking past Dodge City then striking out northeast passing through RockfordIL going so far south that their next stop seemed safe finally reaching Kingston Ontario Canada after an incredible 127 days travel . Upon landing here she gave birth to her third child William H but unfortunately he also died young never making it home to see his parents or siblings again however his widow Mary Jane did make it back home to Kingston and raised her 3 kids there until her death in 1935..
