In 1865, the first gun target in Oconomowoc was placed in a public park. The target was known as the Riflemen's Park. The riflemen were the local militia and their purpose was to shoot at game in the park. In 1892, Oconomowoc became a city and Target Shooting began there. In 1916, Oconomowoc contracted with National City Armory to build its first indoor range which still exists today. Oconomowoc has been hosting target shooting events annually since 1922 with many different firearm types available for participants to use including pistols, shotguns, rifles and machineguns. These events have generally been held on Saturday mornings at various locations across town such as parks or civic centers.

In 1827, Oconomowoc became the first community in Wisconsin to adopt a municipal ordinance to regulate firearms. The ordinance included a prohibition on handguns and pistols within city limits. In 1851, the town passed an ordinance prohibiting the carrying of arms within its boundaries. After two lawsuits were filed against the town by gun owners, the ordinance was repealed in 1854.

In 1963, it became a city when it ratified an act of the Wisconsin legislature which granted city status to towns that had submitted petitions for this designation. The population of OconomowocktOWN increased from 12,000 in 1990 to 25,000 by 2000; however, this increase was due to annexation by Green Bay and Waukesha counties as well as other municipalities within Wisconsin’s Second City boundaries. The current mayor is Melvin Oliver (D).

Oconomowoc is a town in the Allouez County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,842 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. Oconomowoc was founded by Germans in 1836 and named for Johann Gottfried Oeconomicus, an Austrian scientist who had worked on alchemists' recipes for creating new metals from old ones. The first settler in what is now Oconomowoc Township was John Hesseltine. In 1854, Charles Fenton platted this township and it became known as "Oconomowoc". The town began to grow rapidly after railroad construction started through the area in the late 19th century. The town's first store opened in 1889 and its first post office wasestablished in 1893. By 1900, Oconomowoc had a population of 2,640 people and had built several churches and schools. A large cotton gin began operating in 1907 and soon made up a majority of village economic activity; during World War II production shifted to war materials such as rubber products. After the war ended, small-scale manufacturing gradually died out as technology improved and more marketable goods became available outside of agriculture; however, some businesses did continue until around 1990 when they closed due to lack of competition or changes within local industry which made them less profitable than their predecessor firms

At that time, the land that is now Oconomowoc was part of the Fox County region. In 1846, when Wisconsin became a state, Oconomowoc became part of Racine County. The population of Oconomowoc grew rapidly during World War II because of the production facilities that were built there for munitions manufacturing. After the war, however, economic decline took hold in Oconomowoc and other towns in Racine County. In 1965, Racine County merged with Milwaukee County to form a new unified county government. As a result of this merger, many jobs from previous munitions manufacturing activities were lost andOeconomowoc slowly began to lose its reputation as an economic center. However, over time some businesses have returned toOconomowoc such as a medical clinic and an organic farm
