Firearms were not available for civilians until well into the 1800s! During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), handguns were used extensively by Patriots as they fought against British forces. After successful military engagements against Great Britain throughout 1777-1783, patriot militias began arming themselves indiscriminately with whatever firearms they could find! Numerous pistols were purchased from local gunsmiths throughout North America during these years – including many being made in Oconomowoc County! Oconomowoc is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 11,812 at the 2010 census. Oconomowoc is the home of the University of Wisconsin–Oconomowoc and its largest employer, Purdue University. It was also the site of a major U.S. World War II airfield used by fighter planes and bombers during the war. The first Europeans to come to what is now Oconomowoc were fur traders from Canada in 1827-28; they named their new community after Olivier de Montaigne's village of Onagami on Lake Michigan which they had visited earlier that year. The first settler at Oconomowoc was Isaac Nitschke who arrived in 1838 with his family from Germany. Nitschke built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the current location of Main Street and built another cabin further down the bluff where he later erected a two-story frame structure known as "Nitschke House". In 1840, John Fritsch moved into Nitschke's house and started trading goods with Indian tribes living near present day Waukesha County. He named his business "Fritsch & Company",later changed to "Fritsch Bros." After becoming successful wholesale merchants, Fritsch published an article in 1845 entitled "A Proposal for an Agricultural District within this Province" which became famous among agriculturists throughout America and Australia because it advocated land purchase through direct sale rather than rent or mortgage financing techniques then in use. By 1850, about 100 people lived in Oconomowoc; most were farmers who raised animals, grew crops or did both together on small plots of land scattered around town limits. Responding to repeated requests for assistance from local leaders during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Governor David Dixon ordered Colonel Nicholas Miller commanding 8th Cavalry Regiment (Wisconsin Infantry) to establish a military post at Oconomowoc on October 5, 1862 under orders from General Ulysses S Grant as part of Union forces besieging Fort Randall northeast of Milwaukee (). A garrison composed mostly of Army veteran miners formed under Lieutenant John Laughlin established Post #3 there on December 12th but failed to take advantage of natural resources being available close by such as coal seams southeast of town and water rights east of downtown On May 25th 1865 General Order No: XXI immobilized white men without benefitof bounties throughout Wisconsin due to lack thereof following Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued April 6th that year; all black soldiers must immediately leave all states except Missouri & Texasild not return until special order has been received documenting their status As per Order No: XXI white women & children were exempted from capture/imprisonment provided they accompanied menagerie back East In early July 1865 Colonel Miller resigned due to health concerns following news reports Confederate troops had burned down buildings in Racine County adjacent to present day Whitewater
Oconomowoc was founded by George White in 1847 as the nucleus of a new town in the upper Mississippi Valley. The first settler, Nicholas Wurtzel, arrived in 1848 and built a log cabin on the present site of Oconomowoc. In 1850, Isaac Chisholm opened a store at the junction of State Highway 36 and Wisconsin Avenue. By 1860, there were nine businesses in Oconomowoc. The first school was organized in 1862, and by 1865 there were six schools in Oconomowoc. The railroad came to Oconomowoc in 1867 and soon became an important factor in the growth of the community.
