On December 3, 1847, the Town of Oconomowoc was organized from parts of nearby Sauk Rapids and Chilton counties. In 1903, the towns of Chilton and Sauk Rapids were merged to form Milwaukee County. The merger created a town with its own government which continued to operate until 1972 when it became a part of Dane County under the terms of an agreement between Milwaukee County and the state of Wisconsin. Oconomowoc has had several names over its history: "Mackinac," "Fond du Lac," "Wausau," "Wittman." It was changed from Mackinac in 1897 to avoid confusion with another community in Michigan called Mackinac City; however, this name did not stick and it reverted back to Mackinac on November 17th, 1907. The current name honors General James Kiley Weaver who served as Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin from 1919-1924 and 1927-1929 (the only time a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin served two consecutive terms). A post office called Oconomowoc had been established in 1837, but no mail reached residents there until 1861 due to difficulties crossing the river then known as “The Prairie” into Chilton County

Oconomowoc is a town in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Racine County. Oconomowoc was founded on February 12, 1871 by George A. Smith and James H. Westphal as a small watertown on the west bank of the Menomonee River. The site of present-day Oconomowoc was chosen for its location near an existing mill and for its attractiveness as a business center due to its proximity to the railroads and other transportation arteries that connected eastern Wisconsin with downtown Chicago. The original mills in town were destroyed by fire in 1876, but new mills were built and started operations in 1877-1878 (the first ever outside of Chicago). With heavy industry now represented in town, lumbering became an important economic activity; sawmills processed logs into lumber until 1949 when they closed down because of low demand from customers. By 1935 there were 10 mills active in town; however only five remain today (two are inactive). Manufacturing during this time period diversified into plastics products such as Styrofoam and insulation; however, most production stopped around 1980 due to technological advances which made plastic more durable than wood or metal. During World War II Oconomowoc served as a munitions plant producing shells for USAAF planes bombing German targets in Europe; nevertheless much of the town's commercial buildings remained standing after the war ended because they remained surplus to requirements at local businesses that had produced nothing since then! In 1957 Oconomowoc incorporated as a Village form under state law which allowed it more autonomy within Racine County government although it remains administratively subordinate to Racine City Hall located adjacent to village square.. In recent decades many major redevelopment projects have occurred: The first phase included construction of retail/restaurant space along University Avenue between Appleton Road and Bloomfield Road; Phase Two involved improvements to Route 22 including widening sidewalks, installation of streetlights and resurfacing streetscape; Phase Three includes construction of two housing developments - One directly across from Racine Municipal Court on North Main Street and another off South Union Street near Interstate 90 - each totaling over 350 unitsvindicating plans announced earlier this year for two additional large mixed-use developments - one focused upon education uses within city limits (including classrooms used by Wrocław Academy) while the second will focus upon professional development uses comprising offices, studios, research facilities etc.; both projects are expected to open later this year
On January 1, 1836, the first permanent settlement in what is now Wisconsin was established by the United States government. The area that would become Oconomowoc was part of the Town of Green Bay, and until 1845 it was a part of Lamont County.
