In 1852, John Hargrave opened a store in Economowoc and soon became known as one of the leading merchants in the area. In 1857, Milton Sibley opened a livery stable in Economowoc and soon became known as one of the most important horse-drawn services in town. In 1892, George Wirth established Wirth's Brewery in Economowoc and quickly became one of the leading brewers in Wisconsin. The brewery produced over 100 different beers during its years of operations. In 1976, Wirth Brewing merged with ABC Brewing Company to form ABC/Wirth Brewing Company LLC. ABC/Wirth Brewery continues to produce beer today under this new name. On October 15, 1854, the first commercial post office in Oconomowoc was established. On November 1, 1854, the town of Oconomowoc was organized. The first mayor and aldermen were elected on December 3rd. The town had a population of about sixty two people.
