Howard Sherman offered to buy Goodspeed's land if he could find someone who could settle there permanently so Goodspeed donated his land to the county on February 22nd 1825. The first settler in what became Oconomowoc was James Fenton who arrived on July 3rd 1827 with his family fromon Prairie du Chien (now Waukesha). He built a log cabin on top of an old wagon wheel which he named “Fenton’s Wheel” because he thought it would be good for trade goods that he planned to send back and forth across the river to Mankato (then Wausau) every day over winter. The first store opened in Oconomowoc on April 12th 1830 by Joshua Whitehead under license from Daniel Webster as The Indian Store. In 1834–35 Isaac Morse made an unsuccessful attempt to purchase property east of present-day Main Street from James Fenton for $1,000 cash only because he could not get investors interested in developing the land until later when railroads came through town and began supplying more jobs than farming could provide. Morse bought someOf Fenton’s holdings which included most of present-day Green Bay and most also including present-day Racine County excepting what are now Lodi and Kenosha Counties west oftown Limits where they were given to John Prentice during negotiations over annexation by Milwaukee in 1847 as part of efforts by then President James Kossuth To gain control over all Northwestern Territory prior to its admission into the Union asWisconsin On May 1st 1851 – this property lines up with modern northbound I-94 just south of downtown Oshkosh

This store became one of the most important in the community and it still exists today within walking distance of most residents. The store also served as a center for social activities for many years. In 1907, Oconomowoc started its own school system which continues to this day. Additionally, in 1943, Oconomowoc became home to the world's first laser light show when it hosted a show at its high school called "The Laser Light Show at Oconomowoc."
