Oconomowoc, Wisconsin is a small town in the southcentral United States. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Racine County and is located about 12 miles (19 km) east of Milwaukee on US Highway 10. The town was founded in 1847 by George W. Smith and his family from Baltimore, Maryland as a log settlement on Menomonee River where they harvested timber for their farmstead. In 1861, Oconomowoc became an independent city with its own government and Mayor. The first post office was established in 1865 and closed in 1970; however, it was reactivated in 1994 to serve as the primary mailing address for all of Racine County. Oconomowoc is home to two universities: Northwestern Wisconsin University (NWU) and Augustana College. NWU opened its doors in 1898 as Stout Normal School while Augustana college began operations as Conner Prairie Collegiate Institute in 1917.. Both universities are part of the UW-Madison System which also includes UW-Milwaukee, UW-Parkside, UW-Eau Claire, and UW-System schools such as Marquette University and Edinboro University.. The name of the originaltownship waschanged toOconomowocon April 12th 1850 due to popular demand from residents of nearby Waukesha County for a more specific name that would reflect their pioneer culture and community spirit. In 1898, the Town Board voted to change its name to Home Rule Municipality of Oconomowoc after state legislation granted municipalities self-government within their borders under certain conditions (Home Rule Municipal Act No. 6 of 1898). This act solidified the town’s status as an autonomous municipality with full voting power including taxation and budgeting authority over all other municipal units within its boundaries - something not allowed by neighboring towns which were still controlled by county governments at that time. In 1916, during World War I, Oconomowoc became one of 131 United States communities bombed by Great Britain as part of Operation Sea Lion. Many local businesses were destroyed or damaged and many people lost their jobs but there were no injuries reported in any village or town in America hit by this bombing campaign
On July 3, 1871, Oconomowoc was chartered as a city by the Wisconsin General Assembly. The city was named for George W. Oconomowoc, an early settler in the area. In 1905, the city constructed its first water tower.
