Oak Creek is a small town in the La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Prison System. Oak Creek was settled in 1836 by Potawatomi Indians and was named for an oak tree located near where it now stands. The first settler in what is now Oak Creek was John Floyd. Floyd built a cabin on the east side of present-day Old Town Road in 1837. By 1840, there were 10 settlers living in and around Oak Creek. In 1847, Atherton decided to move his farm from Racine to set up new land west of present-day Oak Creek (now known as Atherton Heights). He hired one Joseph Weare to clear and plant his farm with wheat and corn. After planting, Weare discovered that he had struck oil while exploring nearby mines so he became interested in miningoak creek wells. In 1850, weare developed a well at the corner of Main Street and Chapel Road which may have been the first commercial fracking operation ever performed in America In 1865, James Sibley started a sawmill on the east side of present-day Old Town Road near today's intersection of Polk and Wabasha Streets In 1868, Hermann Strobel built a gristmill on Elk Grove Avenue just north of today's intersection of Elmwood Avenue and Jackson Boulevard By 1900 there were 25 residents living in or around Oak Creek with 2 businesses: The First National Bank & Trust Company on Dearborn Street between Park Avenue and State Street (founded 1888), later Federal Savings & Loan Association (FSLA) ;and The Jardine family grocery store on Center street between Elmwood Avenue and Jackson Boulevard (established1910). For many years this store served as both a community center for local people as well as their main source for groceries . In 1960s it closed its doors after being sold to another grocer . However over time some remembrances persist about this store such as having hams hanging from rafters
Oak Creek was a Village in the Town of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, United States. It was founded in 1851 by Captain John C. Hadley and his wife Eliza, as part of the town's initial settlement. The village burned down in 1857 after a fire destroyed most of the original buildings.
