Oak Creek is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,642 at the 2010 census, up from 4,811 at the 2000 census. It is located in Milwaukee County. The first European to visit what is now Oak Creek was Jean Nicolet who sighted it on July 10, 1795 while exploring the Milwaukee River valley. On May 6, 1836, David Dodge founded Dodge City in present-day Oak Creek after traveling through that area and finding no towns or villages with a post office. On December 1, 1836, Dodge City became the county seat of Milwaukee County when all of northwestern Wisconsin was transferred from Racine County to Milwaukee County under then-Governor John Crain's Act of January 16, 1837. The town began as a rural agricultural community near present-day Wauwatosa and developed into an important manufacturing center during the late 19th century due to its location near railroads and other resources. One early manufacturer was John Alderney who built brick homes for his employees in 1895 and 1896 using local sandstone quarries which he leased from the nearby Mount Pleasant Mining Company. Oak Creek is a small town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the city of Milwaukee metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1854 by General George Washington Smith and his family as a farming village on the east side of Oak Creek River near present-day West Allis. At first, only men were allowed to farm; later, women and children were added. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant visited Oak Creek and pronounced it "the most excellent town I have ever seen." The town's name is derived from an aboriginal word meaning "broad watercourse." Oak Creek has experienced many changes over its history: it changed hands several times during the American Revolution (see History of Door County), it was combined with neighboring towns in 1865 interchangeably under the name "Oak Creek Junction," then again became its own municipality in 1876 when each township ceased to exist as separate municipalities. In 1907, Oak Creek lost its right to self-government when Milwaukee annexed it into the city limits; however, since then it has regained some autonomy through referendum votes that have been passed by City Council members. Today, Oak Creek is known for its large green lawns near downtown Milwaukee where people often gather for picnics or summertime BBQs; as well as one of Wisconsin's largest fireworks shows each year on July 4th weekend. One major attraction for visitors to this small community are also some interesting historical landmarks such as the old schoolhouse which served as a post office until 1951 and now houses a library; and Cook Mansion which was used by both local officials (elders) during religious services before being sold in 1984 to become an apartment complex known today simply as Cook Manor Apartments - one of fourteen buildings included within Milwaukee's historic district designated pursuant to section 624(a)(2) of theWisconsin Building Code Act Of 1988
Oak Creek was originally a small creek that ran along the border of present-day Oak Creek Township and Clear Lake Township. In 1839, an act was passed by the Wisconsin state legislature to rename the creek after General George Washington in recognition of his role in helping to create the United States of America. The name change did not take effect until 1850, when it was re-confirmed by an act of the Wisconsin state assembly. The first settlers to live on Oak Creek were farm owners who came from Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. By 1848, there were about twenty families living on Oak Creek. Most of these people were farmers who raised chickens, pigs, cows, and horses. In 1854, a sawmill and grist mill were built on Oak Creek by J.H. Haughey and Wm Fenton. These mills produced lumber for buildings and other products such as shoes and wagon parts. In 1865, a post office was established at Oak Creek with Elisha Graves as its first postmaster. By 1870, there were about forty families living on Oak Creek with twelve shops operating in town. The businesses supplied goods such as flour, pork chops, tea (from China), boots and saddles for horseback riding, cheese (made from skimmed milk), applesauce (made from sugar beets), butter (from cream), eggs, molasses (from potatoes), nails/trees/bushes/fences/wire fences etc., etc.. After Woodrow Wilson became president in 1913, he made changes to American life that had a significant impact on Oak Creek including making it a national park in 1916 and creating Forest Service regulations governing logging which continued into the 21st century
