Oak Creek is a small town in the town of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. Oak Creek is located near the border of Milwaukee and Waukesha County. It is bordered by the towns of West Allis and West Side within Milwaukee County, and the city of Milwaukee to its east. To the south it borders Fox River Park. The first settlers in this area were Germans who arrived around 1837 from what is now Hanover Township, Pennsylvania. They built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Fox River. In 1840, they erected a more permanent structure which became known as "the Old Place". The original pioneers were John Andresen and his wife Anna (née Kapp). They had six children: Johann (John), Wilhelm (Wilhelm), Catharine (Catherine), Emilie (Emma), Mathias (Mathieu) and Gottlieb (Gottlieb). In 1851, German immigrants Peter Struckman and Friedrich Schneider acquired land northwest of present-day Oak Creek from Lake Michigan shoreline along either side of present-day Waukesha Avenue between 3rd Street and 4th Street. They built a farmstead called "Friedrichstadt" on land that still lies within the boundaries of today's Oak Creek Village limits. This site was designated as such on February 1, 1907 by then-President Theodore Roosevelt when he dedicated part of Jackson Park in Chicago to commemorate what he called America's "most conspicuous victory over exploitation." The name "Oak Creek" was given to this location by early settler George Webber because oak trees grew abundantly thereabouts. A post office was established at Oak Creek in 1853, but no mail ever reached it from those days until 1926; that year an express train service began running between Milwaukee westbound via State Rd./Highway 8 & Interstate 94 & Buffalo Gap Airport & back eastbound via I-94 & US 41 just north of downtown Milwaukee carrying mail for Chicago (& other destinations). One possible reason why little mail traveled through Oak Creek during its early years may have been due to its siting: According to one story, local farmers found acorns so valuable that they refused to sell them anyone else food or water while away on their hunting trips because they would not let any outsiders stop them from gathering nuts or other resources1&nbq;though some residents did offer goods or services while out collecting acorns2&nbq;this refusal must have been difficult since trade with other parts of Wisconsin passed through nearby Whitefish Bayou3&nbq;owing also to occasional floods which destroyed homes/property in certain areas4&nbq; nevertheless, despite these difficulties postal service continued uninterrupted until 1926!
